Hi camp!

During the voting for Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer, it was brought up that quite a lot of people don't think the kittens are anthropomorphic. So we have co-written an essay to explain how we are planning to work this.

Cats is both a musical and book canon. We're going by the musical, because the book is pretty much a collection of poems. In the musical, the cats basically tell their stories of who they are and what they do, trying to impress Old Deuteronomy so they can be 'reborn'. And yes, they are cats. But we don't believe they are realistic cats at all.

Real cats don't dress up as mice and cockroaches. Real cats don't carry sacks of loot. Real cats don't salute, don't extend a paw in greeting, don't lift each other, don't do magic...Canonically, these cats are not depicted as normal cats. It goes without saying that real cats don't sing and dance and walk around on two legs, but one could argue that the cats are only talking to each other. The musical has taken a huge amount of artistic license so that humans can perform as the cats.

We are playing them as human size. In canon, their home the junkyard isn't actually in proportion to them. For example, Jennyanydots pretty much completely fills a car boot when she's resting in it, which...well, she'd have to be a pretty massive cat. Mistoffelees carries a paintcan that is sized as though he is a human. Even a thrown boot is completely out of proportion to the cats - it would have to be a baby's shoe if they were cat-size, and it's very clearly not.

We assume they speak Cat, somehow, but if campers can understand Japanese and French and KH-ese and Oz-ese and every other language that people canonly speak, this should not be a problem at all. Camp's magical translating system covers it.

Basically, as seen in canon, they act as - yes, anthropomorphic cats. They are cats, but they have extremely human features, mannerisms and abilities. That's canon. So that's how we're playing them.

We are open to answering any questions or concerns you may have that are not addressed in this essay!
