Self-possessed individuals all have a Shadow; the Shadow is everything you dislike, are afraid of, or otherwise repress about yourself. If you face it properly, it manifests into a Persona.

That is the simplest explanation I can offer for what is a rather complex experience.

To begin with, it isn't a voice-- it doesn't "speak", precisely. A Persona allows me to participate in combat against dangerous entities.
