[So here's a quick but interesting question! Have you ever seen someone sniff the barrier?

...well, now you have.]

Like I said, I was examining the barrier... I just wasn't using my eyes.

*not able to repress the excited grin of a kid discovering that he's in a candy store*

...it's your other senses, isn't it? Or, no, all of your senses in general.

How did you know?

Your brain was doing some very interesting things.

*slides her a smile*

You have your tricks, and I have mine.

Did you find anything interesting, though?

Well... there actually was an odd smell there for a few seconds. I've never smelled anything like it, but it faded before I could trace it back to its source.

Other than that though, nothing really stood out. And I'm hesitant to get any closer than this given what others have told me about it.

*nods*

Prudent. And given that the barrier has been going strong for more than six years now, it's not a challenge to be taken lightly nor expected to be solved with any swiftness. But your skills will doubtlessly prove invaluable in getting us closer with that, as well as with dealing with the many other challenges that crop up here all the time.

That is my job now apparently. The camp's new "Portable Forensics Lab."

Well, I'll just tag along as a lie detector, and we can put the FBI out of business. You really shouldn't worry about the job title, though, nobody does their actual assigned job here. There are occasional pushes for it with a bit of enforcement, but only because otherwise, there's absolutely nothing to them.

Actually, I normally do something similar, but for very different reasons. The man I work for calls people like us "Alphas," and part of our job is to search for these other Alphas so we can help them understand everything they're going through and make sure they, and the people around them, aren't in any danger.

Is this something that your employer runs independently?

Reply

sensationalyst December 23 2011, 00:53:13 UTC
Well, our team has some independence, but we do work for the U.S. government.

I see. So the government's official stance is...?

Officially? We don't exist.
