[ it's not quite as unconscious as breathing, but it's not raising a submarine, either. perhaps it's more akin to holding one's breath repeatedly -- easy enough to do, but requiring constant awareness, though it is (only just) possible for him to maintain it in sleep in a way he wouldn't be able to hold his breath. ]
