Good versus evil kind of thing, with the novelty that the evil people were shown to have a human side too. The original characters were, Uh-- Cyclops, Angel, Iceman, Beast and Marvel Girl as the token female. And Magneto had Toad, Scarlet Witch and... uh... two other guys. Mastermind? I don't remember, I paid less attention to the bad guy.

Yeah, the other two would have been Mastermind and the Scarlet Witch's brother Quicksilver. They're Magneto's kids. I guess it was right before they joined the Avengers.
