Canon: Once upon a time, in a land, far far away before censors really realized they should be paying attention to cartoons, there was a glorious show known to those who loved it as Bob Tarmack Aungrey the Third.
To the rest of the world, it was INVADER ZIM. Invader Zim follows the titular character, Zim the tiny, green, loud moron alien with far too much firepower and only slightly more common sense than the average inhabitant of the planet he has come to DOOM AND CONQUER ITS DISGUSTING MAGGOTS KNOWN AS HUMANS. Zim's battle is truly never over due to an annoying thing with a loud voice and an abnormally gargantuan head.
MiniMoose has been there all the time.

We promise.
But more importantly in canon sections, is his personality. He is adorable and faithful. Always willing to help out and possessing phenomenal cosmic powers in an itty bitty little flying moose body. He is perhaps the greatest weapon ever created by the Irken race. And yet, kind, compassionate. A moose of many words and great eloquence, conveying staggering depth of meaning and philosophical engagement.

Canon: Homestuck is an internet phenomenon that parallels on amazing, of which the author, that's me, occasionally deigns to make an appearance to clarify things or simply change things up a bit. That's the most important part at least, of course there's a bunch of kids and a bunch of trolls but really, whatever shenanigans they are up to don't really matter in the larger scheme of things, by which I mean larger than Vriska's girth. As per JUST NOW, both Homestuck and I are prone to dropping some mad callbacks, which is NOT the bl00bl00d term for 'in-jokes', but I do that too.
Occasionally I can be found riding or kissing things from your childhood, before or after they've died. No, I'm not apologizing for taking Falkor out behind the shed. To kill him, you freaks. Grossssss.

You heard me, you're all busted. Every single one of you. You think you know how to troll? Please. If I were to limit myself to one main factor that you're all missing, it's this: emotional investment.
Why is this important?
Without emotional investment, you're just a disembodied voice (or disemboweled voice) that the audience just doesn't care about! No, not that audience, stop breaking the fourth wall, it's not time for that yet. You can't just be a bastard and call it a day, people can shrug that off or outright ignore it. You have to be, for lack of a better term, a con artist. Make people trust you, even against their better judgement, and then at a critical moment, ET TU, BRUTE? And then you do it again. And again. They'll love AND hate you for it, but I'm not about to get into the quadrants again, so don't ask. Troll romance is confusing enough.
I hear that the Animes do this well sometimes, giving you a lovable character, sometimes building them up as super likeable right before killing them off, sometimes brutally or in the most heartbreaking manner. They probably introduce some super kawaii ^_~ type character after that too to lessen the blow, but that's too much animes for now.
You're also wrong in that you gotta be detached and cool to troll someone. Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzt!That's 25 z's just for how boring you gotta be to do something like that. People don't get angry at someone who doesn't care. They get angry at someone who cares but is infinitely wrong. Of course they're the ones who are wrong, since we all know who is getting trolled here. It's them. It becomes a loop of trolling in which their own reactions causes them intense shame, and it only feeds the fire.
The last bit is that trolling has to be a waste of time. Wrong again, and this is your biiiiiiiiggest failure to date. If each attempt isn't something that can be enjoyed by others well, that's just being selfish on your part. You have to be the man with a plan, a canal, panama.
