The Wrong Trousers appreciation post

Dec 28, 2024 23:48

As promised, albeit somewhat delayed as I haven't had a spare moment to post it, a rundown of all the moments that make me smile in The Wrong Trousers! (You'll have to imagine the "crying with laughter" emoji at the end of almost every line.)

-- The wall ornaments based on the rocket from A Grand Day Out.

-- Gromit checking his watch, which he is suddenly wearing *only* for that shot!

-- The post just being addressed to "Wallace" with no surname.

-- Peter Sallis' brilliant voice acting, especially his falling screams!

-- The fact he's just wearing separate sleeves and an all-in-one shirt/tie/jumper combo with no sleeves!

-- Another AGDO reference with the moon cheese headline on Gromit's paper.

-- The perfect comedy timing of the toast popping up just before the jam can hit Wallace in the face!

-- The intriguing second headline "Mistaken for a cod", LMAO.

-- The piggy bank cunningly hidden behind a picture of a piggy bank.

-- "You look like somebody owns you now!"

-- The parody of Barbara in The Daleks, which I'm sure I didn't fully appreciate as a child!

-- Gromit's eye acting throughout the explanation of the techno-trousers. *g*

-- Gromit's genius solution to "Dogs must be kept on a lead", and when he gets yanked through the door again on the way back.

-- The eyeroll in response to "How were the techno-trousers?"

-- Gromit's palpable anxiety when Wallace answers the door, and the fucking *terrifying* dead-eyed stare of that penguin - how do they make you feel so much with simple claymation?!

-- Gromit's vinyl record of "Bach", and his book titles including 'Sticks', 'Bones', 'Lassie' and 'Sheep'!  He also has a model version of their rocket.

-- The animation of the techno-trousers during the decorating scene is so convincing!

-- The way the penguin just materialises behind Wallace without actually walking behind him!  Is there a scarier villain in anything ever?

-- I feel *every* emotion Gromit goes through while being kept awake for hours...

-- I love how Gromit has a kennel outside despite also having his own bedroom in the house!

-- Gromit's eye bags the next morning!  And the simple touch of having Wallace walk past him so it's clear which housemate is hogging the bathroom.

-- The Republic by Pluto. *g*

-- Wallace sat using a hairdryer despite having precisely no hair!

-- Gromit's low growl at the penguin (rare to hear any vocalisations from him).

-- More amusing book titles with 'Poodles' and 'Sheep II' in the kennel!

-- The teary-eyed leaving scene is so genuinely emotional!

-- More bone-chilling shots of the penguin with lightning flashes and ominous drill-wielding - and in the very same scene, the hilarity of 'Electronics For Dogs' on the bookshelf next to 'Bones' and 'Sticks'!

-- "Room to let - no dogs!" Hahahaaa.

-- Gromit not quite being able to place why the chicken on the wanted poster looks strangely familiar. *g*

-- Wallace wearing pyjama bottoms over the techno-trousers!

-- "Dog reads paper". :D  Also what is "Norman is the elephants?"?!

-- This paper is the Daily Beagle, and "Sheep found guilty" is presumably related to the "Sheepdog Trials" on the front page, LOL!

-- Everything about the scene where the penguin is casing the joint just feels so realistic, with all the little details like Gromit's eyes flicking upward as he ascends with the tape measure. It's so beautifully done. And I fucking piss myself at the penguin's bemused reaction when he sees the dog food box blink at him!  It's so impressive how they manage to convey *everything* he's thinking and feeling even though he has no facial expressions whatsoever.

-- The penguin-shaped catflap!  And the fish décor in Gromit's room.

-- The way he runs his hand (er... wing) through the rubber glove!

-- The almost Wile E Coyote-style pause before Gromit slides to his doom, and the even more perfect comedy timing of his glance at the empty toaster before the jam hits him - amazing. *g*

-- The sound effects are everything, like the suction on the shoes and the echoey clanging of the air vent. I believe 100% what I'm watching!

-- Isn't it convenient that the precious diamond just has a rope cordon and isn't safely inside any sort of case to prevent theft. ;)

-- The whole burglary scene is genuinely so tense!  Love the penguin sweating profusely despite birds not having sweat glands. *g*

-- I also love how Wallace's first instinct in a scary, bewildering situation is to call for Gromit's help. <3

-- "You'll be hearing from my solicitor about this!"

-- "Good grief - it's you!" when the penguin whips off his incredible disguise. :D :D :D

-- "I'll give you what for, you tyke!" (My favourite line!)

-- Gromit looking so menacing with his rolling pin before the penguin pulls out a gun from... somewhere. *g*

-- "There goes me knotty pine!"

-- The wardrobe falling down the stairs is so hilarious for some reason!

-- The entire train chase sequence is utter genius. It's so unashamedly ludicrous, with the huge distances covered and all the cartoonish action, but they present it with such bold confidence that you absolutely buy into it without question!  Up there with the very best movie climaxes!

-- The prison/zoo reveal. :)  And the perfect ending... I also really love the Wallace & Gromit theme tune! (I haven't even mentioned the incidental music but that's used to perfection throughout as well.)

I doff my imaginary hat to all involved in creating this timeless masterpiece!
