Followed you back from the...thing (don't know if you want it mentioned; not stalking, honest).

Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, a former US Army psychologist, wrote a book about 15 years ago called On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society, which cited a number of previous studies done on the effect of war on soldier's psyches. I thought it was well-done, from an interested laywoman's POV. The book was updated and republished a couple of years ago. Don't know if you'd have it available through inter-library loan or something (assuming from username you are Canadian), but it might be a good starting point. He also wrote On Combat, The Psychology and Physiology of Deadly Conflict in War and in Peace which I have not read, but may be of use from the reviews it's getting on Amazon.

And now I see that this post is several months old. Oh, well. Hope you did well on the paper.

Oh my gosh. I. I did do well on that exam, thank you! Sorry, yes, I keep this journal locked for most things since people I know at work found it and that just gets awkward for a lot of reasons. I'm going to go read that fic in a minute but I just wanted to say:

THANK YOU for the book recommendations! The psych department at my university tends towards more modern and researching/experimentation studies with not a thing about the military to be found. I am blown away that you even thought to look and oh my gosh so thankful for the thoughtfulness in the recs themselves. Thank you! I'm going to request them as soon as I can!

I have a ton of relatives and friends in/formerly in the service, so I've done some reading on the subject. Happy to pass it along to someone who's using it in academia. Hope it gives you something to work with.

Not quite psychology (more like sociology), but if you ever get the chance to read Neil Livingstone's The Cult of Counterterrorism, give it a whirl. Interesting pre-9/11 look at SpecOps and the people who slightly fetishize them. (c)1989, so it's kinda dated, but still interesting, especially with all the SEAL team 6 stuff floating around.
