I was feeling tempted today to walk into the American Embassy here in Bratislava and renounce my US citizenship. But then I remembered that being stateless was a very bad thing.

But you know how seeing your flag is supposed to make you feel better, less alone in a foreign country? The Union Jack does that for me, not the Stars & Stripes. I was also annoyed that the US embassy essentially has a bunker outside of it and more police than I've seen at one time since being in Eastern Europe. In the middle of this cute little street in Bratislava's old city. One street over, there's one guy with a bullet proof vest, talking on his mobile, guarding the UK embassy. I'm pretty sure I want to be a different citizen someday.

How's that for a jolly Christmas message?
