which is cheaper? lightsthesky November 7 2005, 21:37:59 UTC
Is it cheaper to break a lease because you broke up and kicked out your SO or is it cheaper to marry someone realize you hate them and then get a divorce?

Perhaps it is cheaper, lightsthesky, but after a series of the same thing, living with a significant other again, and again, and again...what do you have left to give someone?

Can you tell that person that they have your heart? (Corny argument, but these are rather dim college students we're dealing with)

Thanks for the question.

1) find out now if you can stand the little things of day to day with that person

2) by holding off it puts an emphasis on something so utterly trivial in a 30 year long marriage scheme of things that in effect can sometimes pulls attention from parts of being a couple that should receive more attention

1)the little things of day to day? Isn't that what marriage is? A compromise to stand the little things of day to day until death do you part? Both parties should be able to compromise and try to make each other happy, eh?

2)I'm not sure I understand this question...by holding off living together? Hey, if someone lives together and succeeds in a 30 year long marriage, more power to them. Could you explain the question a little more?

Thanks for the questions, alphahaunt...

This is assuming a few things:

Marriage is permanent, or semi-permanent (Divorce is difficult).
The argument is between living together, then getting married, or living together only after marriage. This is to limit entrance of other variables unrelated to this issue, like cohabitation instead of living separately.

Arguments against cohabitation before marriage, with responses:

-Destroys some of the allure of marriage
Shouldn't marriage be about the person, not the marriage?
-Violates some religions
Emotional argument, cannot be used in persuasion
-Increases sexual temptation, which can lead to:
-Premarital sex, which can cause a the loss of partner's sexual allure
Once again, for a lasting relationship, shouldn't there be something more
-Infidelity due to the increased desire from living with a member of opposite sex
Separate issue, not traceable to cohabitation
-Children out of wedlock
Once again, separate issue
Theft of personal belongings, with little recourse, because there is no legal connection between partners.

Oppose thy brother in emotional argumentation? Not for me, thank you...

The argument is not really cut and dry, as it is so gray in certain areas...my speech teacher randomly assigned negative or positive sides, and then she assigned topics. Hey at least I didn't get one of these...

The United States should cease punishment and torture of prisoners for information in other countries.

or

The United States should institute a national healthcare system.

*grin* At least with this one, I have a partner that hates me, and emotional uproar in the classroom. How entertaining!

Hmm...interesting topic. If I remember right, I heard fairly recently, that couples who live together before marriage are more likely to break-up than ones that go straight to marriage. Which must be a lot of people, considering the divorce rate is at like 50%.

Don't know if that would help you any, but I thought I'd comment anyway.
Good luck!

I can only speak about my marriage, but I know that my not getting married right away, but living together for a while (as just roommates at first) we were able to discover what is important to us in our relationship. That way we could decide whether we were really interested in a life-long marriage or if we had better leave well-enough alone. I'm fairly certain that if we had gotten married right away that we would be divorced by now.

I don't know if that helps you or not, but there you go. :-)

PS Did Jonathon ever give you that Signing Time video I gave him for you? If so, what did you think? Feel free to get my e-mail from him if you are interested in discussing any of that kind of stuff furhter. :-)
