i dont know if this helps but generally what you are supposed to give up is something you feel gets in the way of some spiritual connection you have. i dont know if that makes sense. like i dont think giving up masturbation (something very stress relieving and self affirming in my book) would give you a more spiritual connection (to yourself or god or magic or pixies or whatever).

loving your enemy is a thing mentioned a lot in jewish law too. but yeah jesus is pretty rockin.

i think i'm going to give up tv for lent.

i really love talking to you about this sort of religious stuff, since i think you have a really awesome perspective on things. i definitally agree with you synopsis of the catholic church and the not thinking, etc. i kinda think that that was the point, for people to not think about it, i mean. it gave more control to the people in power. it's strange to think that the organization that represented jesus was the complete opposite of his message. churchiness sucks, but jesus was a pretty awesome guy, in my opinion.

i hope you're feeling really excellent right now about the whole topic of death and suicide and whatnot. i think, for me at least, when i was able to give that up to god, that was really the point where i began to feel free and truely happy again. before that, it just seemed so artificial, and i was still scared all the time. so i hope that you are now feeling like i felt at that time. :)
