Keep in mind that AAA is in its FIFTH stage of improvement in No Child Left Behind, which requires that the school be reconstituted. In effect, the AAA curriculum HAS NOT WORKED. Lets fix it. Lets offer these kids a chance at a real education so that they can have a true alternative to the gangs that are ravaging their neighborhoods
( ... )
From my perspective - the point is this; AAA is failing.
I don't care what the curriculum is. I don't care what the focus of the school is as long kids get the education that they deserve.
Van Asselt Elementary is 1.1 miles away from AAA and is excelling - in large part because of their traditional curriculum (music, science, and recess are all offered along with a focus on cultural competence).
Lets look at the numbers:
ALL Seattle Public Schools - • 40.7% of children are on Free/Reduced Lunch • 13.2% are special education • 11.8% are bilingual. • 42.8% are white • 75.4% passed the reading WASL • 56.3% passed the math WASL
Van Asselt Elementary - • 84% - of children are on Free/Reduced Lunch • 16.8% are special education • 47.6% are bilingual. • 2.4% are white • 75% passed the reading WASL • 59% passed the math WASL
African American Academy - • 90% - of children are on Free/Reduced Lunch • 9.7% are special education • 0% are bilingual. • 0.8% are white • 59% passed the reading WASL • 12.8% passed the math WASL
