The car ride back to the office was a relatively quiet one, both Callie and Don seemingly lost in their own thoughts. Callie covered her silence with the occasional comment about the case and the witnesses she and Don had spoken to, but in actuality - she’d spent the entire trip thinking about Colby. She considered Don’s words, seeing time and again that light in his eyes as he spoke of Emily.
And then she remembered Colby’s eyes as he spoke to her of how she was beyond all his defenses, how he wasn’t that guy, how he wanted to give her anything just so she would see him, how he just wanted to know her… if she’d only let him. Then she saw the hurt she caused him when she turned him away and she knew that his eyes had told her everything she needed to know.
He wasn’t that guy and he deserved better from her, beyond what had passed between them. He was her teammate. He was one of the good guys, something not completely common in Los Angeles. Above all else, he deserved her friendship or, at the very least, her gratitude for the flowers he’d given her that so easily brightened her day.
As she stepped off the elevator and into the bull pen, she made the decision to talk to him - to thank him, and hopefully come to at least some understanding of what was between them. If they could put everything else aside, she knew they would make a good team and that was at least some place to start.
With her mind set, she rounded the corner to his desk - taking a deep breath and exhaling as soon as she saw that he wasn’t there. She briefly scanned the office, trying to catch a glimpse of him, before she frowned. Seeing no sign of David either, she realized the two must not have made it back to the office yet, suddenly losing her nerve because of it.
She was about to turn toward her own desk, still frowning, when the setting sun reflected off the glass of a picture frame, drawing her attention to the desk in front of her. She wasn’t sure why but she took a step closer now, her frown slowly turning into a curious smile as she reached out for the picture that caught her eye. The picture behind the glass was of a family: an older gentleman whose eyes reminded her of Colby’s as he admired the woman sitting next to him. This same woman looked on with adoration as two young boys climbed onto her lap. The man standing behind her looked just like her and stood with his arm around a lovely young woman whose smile was the same as both the young boys. Callie’s own smile softened, understanding that this was Colby’s family… the ones he loved and had left back in Idaho. In the corner of the same picture frame was a photograph, worn with age and the many places where it must have followed Colby. The picture was of a farm, covered in freshly fallen snow… broken only by the foot steps of the person taking the photograph. This was his home, a piece of who he was: Colby Granger from Winchester, Idaho… soldier, brother, son, friend, and teammate.
Callie was still smiling as she replaced the photograph on the desk and moved to write Colby a quick note. She folded it and tucked it into his keyboard to make sure he would see it before she walked away.
For what it’s worth, thank you… she wrote.
She knew he’d understand the message.
