Alan sat in his chair in the Craftsman, pretending to read the paper. He was far more interested in the 3.5 year old standing at the coffee table in the middle of the room. She’d been telling herself a story, using her favorite set of building blocks to aid in the visualization. Despite her age, it was already apparent that Charlie and Amita’s little girl had an aptitude for engineering.
Alan would catch his granddaughter in moments like this, her story at a stall as she tried to work out the next feat of architecture required for her tale. Her hand would find her hip and her lip would be in a full pout as she pondered. Every time she made that face, Alan smiled.
In these moments little Maggie reminded him most of her name sake, her grandmother Margaret. He remembered his wife standing like that when Don or Charlie did something particularly frustrating… which was often. Alan chuckled to no one at the memory, and kept smiling.
He always heard there was nothing in the world like being a grandparent. This was especially true when his granddaughter made him feel like his Margaret wasn’t so far from him.
