Colby stared blankly at the shelf in front of him. The wooden shelf his dad built could barely be seen beneath the sea of Little League and football trophies, All-State medals, and various trinkets of athletic success.

On the wall behind, there were certificates of honor for academic achievements. His dad didn’t want him to be just another dumb jock.

He was fifteen. Just… fifteen and his dad had always been there. Through victory and loss, through broken arms, and broken hearts… his dad had been there.

Colby thought he always would be…

He wouldn’t cry. That wasn’t his style. Instead, he would make his dad proud.

He nodded as though he spoke the words out loud. He would make his dad proud, he resolved once more.

He would finish high school… with honors in academics and in the sports he loved.

He’d go to college. He’d be the first. He would excel.

And then, he’d join the military. He’d serve his country with pride.

If he made it through that, he would always do what was right - in his job, and in his life. He would live by duty… by honor. That’s what his dad would have wanted.

His gaze shifted to the mantel. In the center, a frame held the faded black and white picture of his parents on their wedding day. To the right sat a worn out photo of his dad in his Army Class A uniform, the same look of pride in his eyes he always gave his son. To his left, Colby reached absently for the frame. He was five… his dad was by his side. Their smiles were the same as both sat with their jeans rolled up to their knees, legs over the dock… fishing poles at the ready.

He wouldn’t cry. [ original post]
