Angel/Angelus or the vampire version of Jekyll and Hyde

When I first watched Btvs season two, the question of knowing if Angel/Angelus was one and only person wasn't a preoccupation (not that it's really one now, :)), my unconscious reading was that they were two different beings. And there're many elements in various episodes that pushes towards this interpretation. But on rewatch, there 're just as ( Read more... )

Yup. Great meta.

Joss got asked about this last April and he basically said that the story wants to have it both ways. But mostly that's cause how else would it be "OK" for Buffy to be with Jenny Calendar's murderer. I prefer the story where she *is* with Jenny Calendar's murderer.

Enemies is particularly instructive on this, I think. Angel does a *very* good job of impersonating Angelus. And Buffy notices that it's too good a performance and withdraws a bit.

I didn't know about J Whedon's answer. Thank you for this piece of information and it's nice to have the confirmation that they wanted it both ways, even though it seems contradictory in terms: it keeps the text open and makes for a much more interesting reading.

Followed your debate on Buffyforums about Spike's arrival. Seemed like some people had difficulties to grasp at your ideas and seeing that your position had nothing to do with the fact your favourite character is Spike and everything to do with the logic in the writing.

Joss is in some ways not as brave a storyteller as he'd like to think he is.

I completely agree with your analysis. So much so that I am always a bit surprised when I meet someone who believes in the theory of completely separate personalities.

I'm sorry for answering so late to your comment; I was away for a few days.

Yes. The Angel=/=Angelus is a possible interpretation, but you have to ignore all the other clues pointing at the opposite. I guess it probably has to do with the sort of stories you like best, stories where situations are clear cut and more comfortable or stories with more jumbled set up.
