Once more with...

Not long ago, after having had a more than a sufficient general idea of  what Spike (and Illyria) has become in Bill Willingham's last series, I had told myself that I would stay clear from IDW's site. I wasn't good at it: the news about an upcoming miniseries featuring Spike by Bill Williams (found on Buffyforums), stirred my curiosity.  ( Read more... )

I love your description of Lovers Walk!Spike. Hopefully Joss will deliver us a Spike closer to the mutli-dimensional Spike we all know and love!

Lovers walk is great and it has been such a pleasure to rewatch it. Spike's role is mostly comedy (though it has other uses) but the variety of the facets displayed by the character is impressive. The writers really had their fun and J Marster's glee at playing Spike is very palpable too.

"Hopefully Joss will deliver us a Spike closer to the mutli-dimensional Spike ". Crosses fingers hard. By comparison with what has been done with the character lately, B Lynch almost appears as a genious. Though I tend to think, the womanizing theme going on with Spike originated in the harem thing which I thouroughly detest for more than one reason. Like you I'm starving for something really meaty for Spike.

Lynch also had Spike more than happy to exchange fluids with that demon woman in Asylum. I mostly liked Asylum, but there were a few clangy notes, and unfortunately it seems like in every iteration since then the clangy notes have increased and substance has decreased. That's true in Lynch's work as well. About Lynch I agree that where the others are dreadful, he's merely pretty bad!!!

I'm left with an unhealthy animosity for all things IDW, and am entirely too pleased by every negative notice they get.

Lover's Walk is great!!!

This scene didn't really put me off, because I can see Spike occasionnally grasping at a chance. Occasionnally being the key word of course. There were some thing I appreciated in Asylum but others I was more than "meh" about. The references about Angel seemed rather artificial for me: Spike is a sufficiently experimented fighter for him not to ask what would Angel do in this situation. And, as Spike's arc rested for its greatest part on him discovering he wasn't like Angel...

I don't feel animosity towards IDW as a whole because I think about the editors who seem to be pretty decent people and even the comics writers seem to be honest when they say they enjoy Spike. (That being said, B Willingham's reaction towards J Whedon was inadmissible). Sure, when I discover what they are doing to these characters, then anger rises. But mostly I just regret J Whedon doesn't have time or isn't willing to have a look at their projects.
