The whole innovative stream-of-consciousness was very good in Catcher in the Rye, but I never got into the swing of Salinger's diction and style.
I must say that I am irremediably prejudiced against modern coming-of-age novels. :-(
I just finished The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time today, and it did not live up to its hype. It's been making the rounds on math team [yesi'madork], but I didn't find anything particularly great about it. But if you liked Catcher in the Rye, you'd probably like tCIotDitNT.
I've read The Catcher in the Rye and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time and liked both of them very much (although I think I liked the latter a bit more). They're both pretty often recced lately, so I suppose there's a bit overrated at times, but they're both genuinely good.
Awww. I haven't yet read The Perks of Being a Wallflower, but I loved both Catcher in the Rye and Curious Incident. Catcher... Holden is just so easy to relate to and empathize with. My favorite scene in the book is the one where he's in the phone booth and he wants to call someone so he goes through a whole list of people, but he finally decides to not call anyone. And then he just steps out and it's like he's not even saddened at all.
Curious Incident was just a really moving look into autism. The Christopher's dad talking to Christopher scene made me cry.
Overrated? I don't know. They're just good books, in my humble opinion. ^^
IMO Catcher in the Rye was just innovative for its time. Sadly, I'm not a Salinger fan :-(
For the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, I think the book was well-written, but it has gotten far more praise than [I think] it merits. Just my opinion.
However, I think all three books are worth reading; I would recommend all of them in a heart-beat. Each is interesting in its own turn.

All three of the books are, nonetheless, well-written.
