I find myself thinking that, more and more in the modern world, it's not happiness we thrive for any more.

It's what we want, but society and the world can put masks on it and can parade around a number of different things that are supposed to make you happy, but are really just shams to help them profit and reap their own happiness in the form they believe is right.
There's just a lot of muck you have to wade through to find the thing that's true for you, I think.
