Valenti: Where is she from? Maria, where are they from? Where did they come from?

Maria: A very nice family. And like you said sheriff, we wouldn't want to destroy any other families in this town, would we?

Roswell was a show that aired for three years and was saved by fans from cancellation twice after being moved around networks was detrimental to its ratings. Even though it was based on the book series Roswell High, it ended up being its own separate entity from the books because of storylines and the way the characters were handled.

The show originally centered around the love story of Liz Parker, a teenager born in Roswell, New Mexico, who was shot in an argument at the diner she worked and Max Evans, the half alien who had been in love with her since he'd met her when they were children. As time went on, however, the show moved focus from just the romance of the two central characters to the lives of everyone that were now being pulled together because Max had risked his life and secrets to save Liz. This is important because Max isn't the only alien-hybrid in town -- his sister, Isabel, and his best friend, Michael, are aliens, too. Coming in with Liz are her two best friends, Maria and Alex.

As the show moved on, the story became about the desire that the aliens (or as they were dubbed by wacky best friend, Maria, "The Pod Squad") had to find out who they were and where they had come from. They certainly hadn't counted on or planned on falling in love with humans along the way.

There were definite story arcs throughout each season -- although some of them fell by the wayside or were overshadowed by the more intense storylines. For three years the group of six friends dealt with trying to keep their secrets from the police, then the FBI. They fought evil aliens, found out that the Pod Squad were royalty, death with death and betrayal and still tried to handle the more mundane world of schools and jobs like most teenagers.

The series ended when five of the original friends plus one more, Kyle, fled Roswell to escape FBI agents that wanted to kill them.

"The thing is, we don't know anything about these Czechoslovakians. Are they good Czechoslovakians? Are they bad Czechoslovakians? We don't know. They're just random Czechoslovakians. For all we know, they don't have their passport."

Maria DeLuca is the quirky and almost hippy-like best friend of the main character of the show, Liz Parker. Her mother is one of her best friends and she is fiercely protective of her.

Maria begins the series as the wacky friend, the flake, and the loose cannon most likely to expose the secret. Her fear of Isabel in particular pushes her near the breaking point, but her compassion keeps her from acting on her fear. Once she's conquered her fear, she quickly becomes one of the stronger members of the group. Even when she is scared to death, she does her best to protect the people she has chosen to -- Michael, Max and Isabel. This has put her at odds with police and her mother, but she sticks to what she feels is right.

She seems to go from one extreme to another very quickly, but what has happened in those moments is that she faced her feelings and made her choices in that short instant. Nothing seems to bother her or surprise her any longer. She can still be passionate about things, but is no longer so flighty or hysterical.

She has the conviction to stand behind her decisions, and she can keep her head in a real crisis. Meeting a record label exec might send her into a fit of nervous pacing as she sniffs eucalyptus oil, but faced with evil aliens or a gun-wielding lunatic, she's grace-under-pressure personified.

Maria has a calm, practical way of dealing with difficult people and has a willingness to do whatever needs to be done when it comes to her friends. She is incredibly loyal and even when she has been hurt by her friends or her love, she will still defend them with everything that she has.

She's a quick thinker and she can come up with a solution to a problem fairly quickly. With a almost eidetic memory, she's very good at research and keeping track of things. While others might forget small details, Maria doesn't. She can't. It's just one of those things. However, this is often at odds with the fact that she will act like a flake if she's feeling too stressed or can shut herself down to get her bearings again.

Maria is a talented singer and can find an essential oil or natural method of healing for any kind of stress related incident. She has an essential oil for just about everything because her mother is a modern day hippy.

She is also known to be a skilled photographer and knows her way around photography and musical equipment. She also plays the guitar.

She has no super powers and nothing abnormal unless being able to find an essential oil, an herb or any kind of homeopathy blend for any situation? She also claims that being able to understand and communicate with Michael Guerin without strangling him is a super power.

She's probably right.

Michael: "No, I don't need anyone."

Maria: "Well, maybe I do. Did you ever think of that? I mean, look at Max and Liz. They can't bear to be separated. But you, you can just throw me away. Just like that. Why is that, Michael? Why?"

Michael: "Maybe because I love you too much. Goodbye."

At the end of Season 1, Michael has broken Maria's heart. Again. Claiming that he loves her too much to let her be around him while he tries to find out who he is and how to control his powers, he breaks up with her. Or, as Maria so bluntly puts is "able to throw her away without a thought."

Maria's mom, Amy, is angry and upset that her daughter keeps getting hurt by this boy and resolves to do something about it. Someone in her mother's circle of friends tells Amy about the progressive school that has so many things not just the usual math and science classes. Amy decides that this is exactly what her free spirited daughter needs to heal and enrolls her in the school.

Maria is not happy about leaving Liz and Alex, but they both encourage her to give the school a chance and tell her they'll come break her out if she is really that unhappy.

After some serious thinking and the additional hurt of Michael refusing to talk to her at all, Maria resolves to try out the boarding school.
