I haven't watched any TV in ages, but I started watching a Brazilian TV series today, Cidade dos Homens/City of Men. I like it, I love listening to the language.

Cidade dos Homens is shown in Finland on YLE Teema. Read about the tv series in Finnish.

YLE Teema has Brazil as a theme this fall. :)

that series is very weak, though somewhat acclaimed in Brazil. Have you watched the movie? City of God and City of Men? They are far better than the tv series. Sadly, some people really think my country is ALL like that, which is not true.

I actually liked the first episode, it's was certainly different how they contrasted learning about Napoleon's wars in school to the gang wars in the favelas. I haven't seen the movie City of God, but I might watch it someday. I thought the tv series was called City of Men?

I didn't think all of Brazil was like City of God, I saw it more as one fictional tale about life in the favelas. Is there any Brazilian movies that you would recommend? I might not be able to get them in Finland, though... I have a friend who just spent 6 months in Porto Alegre as an exchange student, she is really excited about Brazil, she's been there on vacation several times and she speaks Brazilian Portuguese. I think she might be interested in watching any good Brazilian movies with me...

I recommend:
Central Station
Troppa de Elite
City of God
Carandiru

you might be able to get them, or even watch them on the web since they are not as new. Fernanda Montenegro was nominated for an Oscar and the film was nominated for best foreign language film when it came out.

Troppa de Elite just won the best foreign film this year (I forgot which award that was, though)
