I've found that the secret to making friends is to let someone else who knows you and many others introduce you. You need some good connector friends, and people who know what sort of people you get along with!
I have the same problem, but I've been dealing with it a little bit better. You just need to get the attitude that if you screw up and say something stupid just don't care about it. That screw up doesn't reflect the overall person that you are. Plus most people have their own screw ups, you just may do it before them :] Just remember most people are accepting and the ones that aren't, well you can ignore them and never see them again!
This is going to sound horribly cliché (and a bit rich, coming from me), but I’ve found that disregarding your insecurities and actually focusing on the people around you (i.e. figuring out how to make them feel comfortable, as opposed to dwelling on your own awkwardness) can really take you a long way.
And Becky’s right - who cares what other people think? If you mean well, people will realize that and respond to it positively.
