In the spirit of the Season of Much Sugar Consumption that we are in the midst of, I thought I'd make a review of my very favourite confection:
These are not your standard corner-store, pick-me-up-on-the-go fair, oh no. They are the ultimate in gourmet chocolate. On par with the Hershey's Special Dark & co. yet so much more. 100g of chocolatey heaven.
Look how classy they are:
As you can see from the packaging, they are fair trade and organic certified, always a plus for the ethical consumer. Means they're a bit pricier than your average Hershey, but they make up for it. They are also vegetarian and vegan friendly!
The texture of the bar is lovely. The chocolate is not too soft, and comes in snappable rectangles. The rectangles are smaller than most similar chocolate bars, which has the disadvantage of meaning that the segments often don't snap evenly along the lines. However the many segments also mean that it's easier to make the bars last longer- a definate advantage at $4.55 Canadian for a 100g bar.
But how do they taste? you are asking. Mmmmarvellous. The firm chocolate takes a moment to melt in the mouth but quickly turns quite smooth. The Maya Gold is a dark chocolate flavoured with orange and spices. The orange flavour and the dark chocolate blend well together, neither dominating the other, and produce a rich, but not overly-heavy taste. The "spices" are more in the aftertaste and are fairly subtle, but definately add to the overall chocolate experience. At %55 percent cocoa, Maya Gold may not be at the darkest end of the chocolate spectrum, but this works to its advantage, meaning the orange is not overpowered and doesn't leave behind that slightly chalky feeling in the mouth that some of the darkest chocolates do.
Overall, the taste is fantastic and the texture quite good. My only real complaints are the steep price (but this is understandable, given they are Fair Trade and organic) and fact that the segments don't seperate evenly. Otherwise, amazing.
P.S. -Has anyone else tried any other Green & Black's bars? What did you think? How do you think they stack up against mainstream gourmet bars, or against other FT/organic bars? I've tried Cocoa Camino chocolate mint and chocolate almond, and I gotta say, I found them not nearly as satisfying or rich.
Happy Halloween!
