I came across that article too! I wondered what Anime's meant exactly by "sugar stars." Looking at them I think they'd be exactly like those little colored candies they'd put in bracelets and hollow plastic sticks. Sorta like Nerds, but sweet.

I've always loved the way they look, but the taste is always a little disappointing to me. I generally prefer other wagashi when I'm craving a Japanese sweet, but I guess kompeito tends to travel a bit better than a clump of daifuku.

i like using kompeito to decorate stuff, like cakes or parcels but other than tossing in kompeito to like hot chocolate i hardlly eat it. i always have a bag of it handy, but it`s not my first thought for wagashi.

I've seen Spirited Away and the little soot balls grabbing at the candy was one of my favorite scenes...so cute

I reviewed them for Candy Addict a while back. The bag I had spelled it Konpeito though

こんぺいと can be written konpeito or kompeito. both are right but i always write it kompeito because that`s closer to how it sounds. it`s a personal choice though.
