I agree with this rant, ahem, I mean post, in part, and disagree with it in part. Having not seen the "rules" that the writer posted for her (and I am assuming it is a she, although I believe you carefully avoided assigning a gender--shows how little faith I have in womankind, when in truth, that level of arrogance generally is found in the male of the species, isn't it

Uh, no. Actually, when I read this post, I immediately thought of a particular writer who would fit your description (female), although in reality, "he" is of actually just another J.T. Leroy. So I think your assumption is correct!

LOL! Whomever could you mean? Actually, I thought of at least three writers likely to have posted such a list of rules. You know all of them, and only one purports to be male. Since I don't play in those sandboxes, Ela or you will have to tell me which writer dares make such demands.

I don't think you should know who I am writing about. If you happen to stumble on this writer's works, I think it best if you are free of prejudices and able to make your own decisions.
I agree completely with you, Ela. I reserve the right to praise that which is praiseworthy, totally ignore the crap that comprises a huge part of what passes for writing these days, and give constructive and honest criticism where it is warranted and appreciated. If I had a dime for every time that someone had asked for an opinion - and then castigated me for my response - I could retire and spend the rest of my days ....Running? Writing? Reading? All of the above......
So go forth and ignore, criticize....and especially mock the writers who think that the world revolves around them!
Well, that icon. How could one keep a serious expression on one's face looking at that? I can't. LOL
As I've told before, I'm a teacher. I teach people to design things. The first thing, however, which I have to teach the students to accept is that everything they design is there for criticism. There is nothing as pathetic as a designer who cannot take it. It does not matter in what way the critique is offered, one has to grow the backbone to take it, it goes with the professions in which one uses designer skills. The same is true about any creative work, whether it is done by amateurs or professionals. Only if one does not go public with something, then it is not free for critique. So, a fanfiction writer who cannot take the shit with the roses, from my point of view, is quite pathetic thing. But that's the way world lies today.
People seem to have more problems taking criticism today than in the past. I read an editorial in the paper today, discussing the fact that the focus on building one's self esteem that flowed from the era of Mr. Rogers and Sesame street - two programs which started in the ?70's? and which focused both on teaching and fostering self esteem - have created generations who overvalue their own importance. A little too much "I love me." I think a byproduct of that focus is that one is taught, subconsciously perhaps, that the stuff done and made by me is wonderful. Even if it SUCKS! To put it plainly.
So now, when Junior is grown up and creating, both artistically and in the work setting, he/she is unsettled by the fact that not everything he/she does gets the same reaction as the ashtray made out of flour and water in nursery school!
