historyPersonality: One often wonders, upon first meeting Ukraine, especially if it's after meeting her family; just how could this girl be related to Russia and Belarus? Between the three siblings, each one of them differs from the other two and stands out in some way- Russia by being the only boy, and Belarus by differing from her siblings in both appearance and demeanor- what makes Ukraine so different is that she’s the most stable of the three of them. Between Russia’s threatening atmosphere and tendency for random violence (shared by their youngest sister as well), and Belarus’ vulgar, harsh speech, overall mean-ness and psychotic obsession with her brother, Ukraine is a true breath of fresh air.
Her personality is in many ways, very different from theirs; she’s honest, earnest, gentle and soft, and obviously always very well-meaning. Her demeanor is very cheerful in a way that differs from her little brother's; it's simply much more sincere, and she can usually be found with a smile on her face. Sweet and kind, warm and affectionate, and speaking politely but truly not in a distant or formal way, Ukraine carries a welcoming atmosphere about her. She's very nurturing and is quick to take care of anyone in need, in particular if they’re in need of food- due to her own experience and unpleasant memories, she can’t stand seeing anyone suffer from hunger. In general, nothing describes Ukraine better than the word motherly. She was the oldest sister in her family, and to her siblings she was the only true parent they ever had; she had to learn to be reliable, protective, to be a good mother to them and help them whenever possible- surviving int their conditions was no easy task, and she knew this, but she did her best. In this way, Ukraine had to grow up and mature really quickly. Although they were children, her maternal instincts were already very well-developed by that time, and today, they are stronger than ever; she is a mother hen in many ways and still treats almost everyone she meets as if they're her child.
Described by Russia as having a big heart, this fits her perfectly, and this big heart of hers is also a weakness. Her motherly nature goes both ways; she's also a worrywart and a bit of a crybaby, and as often as she is found smiling she is found worrying and freaking out and overreacting greatly to the slightest things. She is as quick to take care of someone as she is to worry and fret over them and their well-being, and usually her smiles are accompanied with tears in her eyes. Although mentally she is the most stable, her emotional stability is another matter; it's rare to find her relaxed or calm because she nearly constantly distressed or has something on her mind to lose sleep over. Frequently one finds her reacting by bursting into tears and running off dramatically while crying, tears streaming behind her and everything- and even when she's not doing that, she cries very easily and it's easy to find her in this state. When she is not occupied with her own problems, it's the problems of others, though she is not one to get involved in their private matters and she knows where to cross a line; she simply cares a little too much, and combined with her overreaction tendencies, these are the results. She is said to be constantly dragged into messes and this too, is caused by her natural wish to take care of everyone and everything.
As this demonstrates, Ukraine is sometimes, a bit too nice for her own good; although usually honest and earnest, she is anything but frank and is never one to point out a flaw in a mean way- she is more likely to sugarcoat her words when it comes to others, if to speak of it at all. Her niceness tends to get in the way when she has to do something she doesn't like; standing up is incredibly hard for her, as is saying anything that could be considered unpleasant, "bad" or "mean" or in any way not nice to anyone else without feeling overwhelmed by guilt. She's also frequently a bit naive.
She's not a very social person; in fact, she's very meek and awfully shy. Simply put, this is because Ukraine is incredibly insecure, painfully self-conscious and her self-esteem is incredibly low- for this reason she's very modest, and compliments and even small forms of kindness tend to be recieved by her with either tears of joy or embarrassed flailing and blushing and denying of the compliment. Growing up, she had difficulty trusting and opening up to her neighbors and allies; and even today, she has much difficulty talking to people and making friends. What she hides deep inside is the fact that she's actually very lonely at times. Her siblings are not what they used to be- her relationship with both of them is very difficult, and her little brother has been more than a bit harsh to her, as deeply as she loves him. This feeling is enhanced by the fact that, until only a few years ago- five years, specifically, and to a nation this is a very small amount of time- she, her siblings, and several other nations would all live as a "family" in a large house together; representing the Soviet Union. It was not what you'd call a happy family life at all, and with all the pain and trouble it brought her, after the Soviet Union collapsed and everyone including herself who were part of it became finally independent and left- a part of her cannot help but miss the feeling of family, and at times she's saddened by the way they broke apart. Family is something she truly values, after all.
Even so, it is nothing that she regrets; she is proud, deep down, of how she finally managed to make it through, stayed strong and received the independence she deserved and, in her eyes, broke free of her brother- knowing that it must have hurt him more than a little, which pains her on the inside as well and only serves to make their relationship more complicated- and yet, she would not give this up. There is a side of Ukraine that is rarely brought out; the determined, strong girl who can overcome anything, who is deeply proud of her culture, of her people, and who worked hard to reach her goals; who hides a truly strong will, underneath all those layers; the girl who was once the nation of the Cossacks, who, simply put, were kind of badass. She can actually be quite clever and intelligent, though she doesn't really get the chance to show it- and it's usually when it comes to mathematics.
Aside from being motherly, Ukraine is also very domestic. Farming is her specialty, and as with every Slavic nation, she is not unfamiliar with starvation and famine, something that both she and her siblings suffered so frequently throughout history. She loves baking and making food, but by this point she's learned to be satisfied with what she has enough that she doesn't need to eat too much to be satisfied- although, her poor economy and the troubles that come with it, just one of the things that leave her in a constant state of worry, also have something to do with it. She's excellent when it comes to hospitality, and is a bit of a housewife as a well as a farm girl- she's incredibly hard-working, and very competent in housework and chores.
Powers & Abilities: As a nation, her only true supernatural ability it that she heals much more quickly and generally, her body is a bit stronger than the average human's; but she is a nation, a country, and as such she is linked to her people, and everything that happens to them, happens to her. She is more or less immortal and does not age. Aside from that, as mentioned, she's actually quite intelligent when she wants to be, but she's also hard-working and very skilled in farming, housework such as cooking and cleaning and she likes to bake and sew. She'd be better at dancing if it weren't for her back problems, and though one will not expect it- she's got quite a lot of experience when it comes to combat, so she's not too bad at that, either.
What items will they be bringing with them? Just the clothes on her back and her pitchfork, which she seems to always have with her.
Third-Person Sample: There was no possible way for her calm down.
Calm down. Calm down? Calm down? How could she even consider trying to calm down? The thought, the very concept of staying calm didn't even enter her mind, no, not at all, and Ukraine could only run around from place to place and trying not to cry- oh, and why did she bring her pitchfork with her too, it was so heavy- ah, that's right, she just woke up a few hours ago and she was preparing to start doing today's work, and- it was truly strange, the way thing were getting blurry after that and how she suddenly appeared her but oh, never mind that! It was so empty here, too- and dark and deserted and it almost reminded her of war-
And at this thought, Ukraine suddenly stopped her rapid movement. The atmosphere in this scenery, it was- there was something about it, and it was familiar. Far too familiar. It was this that made her, ironically, try harder to hold back her tears and calm down just a bit, because, if this- if this is what she thought it was- but that can't be right, of course, when she thinks about it that won't make sense, oh, not at all- this truly couldn't get more strange, it really couldn't. All this, at once, was just a little too much for Ukraine's mind to handle at once, really- sighing, she put the pitchfork she was clutching with such strength aside somewhere, and realized how sweaty her hands were. And oh goodness, her back hurt quite a lot, too- really, just what could have been the cause of this kind of pain?- and as she stretched and took a deep breath, she suddenly realized- she felt something. Something inside her pocket, that she didn't take notice of until now, for some reason. Although, now that she found herself more capable of thinking clearly- of concentrating on her situation a bit more- no, even then, she couldn't find any way at all to explain all this.
Reaching inside her pocket, she felt around with her fingers- something rather small, though not microscopically. In another situation, she would have probably noticed this right away- ah, but an item this size, not too large but not too small, shouldn't she have noticed this earlier. What she had in her hand, what she held up to examine closely as she took it out to her pocket- was a device unlike anything that she has ever seen.
Normally, she would be distracted by this curious piece of technology, but the note somehow caught her attention more, this time. Because of the two simple, but strangely ominous words written on it. With a small head tilt of curiousity, Ukraine read out-loud to herself;
"'Use this'...?"
First-Person Sample: U, uhm, [ A discreet cough, and then, the sound of someone clearing their throat. ]
P-please excuse me. I'm very sorry for bothering you, everyone! I-I didn't mean to- I-I just have a question, you see, and I was wondering if, perhaps, anyone could help with me with this one little matter, and then I won't bother you any more, I promise! I, I'll try to make this quick, I don't want to take too much of your time- oh dear, I should introduce myself, shouldn't it? H-how rude of me, not to even say my name! Aaah, I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry! I-I'll think it over more carefully next time, please forgive me! M-my name- my name is Ukraine! [ She takes a deep breath, seemingly relaxing a bit after saying that. ] ...Yes, t-that is it! I-I can do this... And, and- i-if anyone could... please answer... my question...
[ Suddenly, silence. Then, after the strange pause of Ukraine's end- there is a loud cry ] Wha, what am I doing?! This is a terrible idea! I, I can't ask something that embarrassing or I'll be made a laughing stock of and then nobody will buy anything from me anymore and then I will have even less friends and then I'll be even more poor, and, and- and- and, and everything will be horrible! S-sorry, everyone, I'll do better next time and I'll make it up to you! So please forget about everything that just occurred and everything I just said! T-this never happened, yes? Yes! Good bye!
