Will Computers Take Over?

I encountered an article about AI. It talks about the dangerous possibilities that could arise from current and future developments in AI, and though it claims developments like HAL, The Matrix, or Terminator cyborgs aren't in our near future, it is conceivable that machines could soon take more jobs currently performed by humans, and we are ( Read more... )

Computers are incapable today of what you and I would consider "Intelligence". Computers do what we program them to do and nothing more. When you have a new idea for a more efficient data compression, a human being has to write the code. The computer is not able to just randomly splatter instructions down and have it do anything, just as a million monkeys on a million typewriters won't write Shakespeare.

the human brain is a massively parallel relational database. We would need to make something enormous to recreate its abilities. And even so, we wouldn't have the first clue how to go about programming it because we cannot accurately describe what intelligence itself is, much less model it.

I do not expect to see real AI in my lifetime. We may see smart systems for controlling airplanes and self driving cars. But they'll be single-task machines and they'll be programmed to that task.

Not that I want to scare you further, but look up "The Singularity" on Wikipedia. The Singularity is a point in the future when technology gets smart enough to equal or surpass humanity. Man will become outdated and be replaced! Of course, there are many people who say that this theory is hogwash.

Maybe I'm weird, but I liked Stross's "Singularity Sky".

I don't know if you realize the irony in that - because it'll only happen if humans allow it to. With how "intelligent" we are, I have a guess we won't.
