Just found out this comm exists. *does a little happy dance*
St. Elsewhere, I love you. And admittedly, I've had to watch you out of order because it's near impossible to find S2-6 anywhere, thus I've been watching a handful of eps at a time up at a museum. Anyway.
THIS.
Meet Dr. Jack Morrison. He is a woobie. Seriously, everything bad happens to this poor man. Most notably for this rant, when he is doing outreach work at a prison, there's a riot and he is brutally raped. He goes back home to recover and while he's there, meets his high school sweetheart again and after he comes back to Boston (where SE is set) they end up getting married.
High school sweetheart, Joanne, has two kids from a previous marriage. Jack is a widower with a son of his own.
Anyway, so in an ep I haven't seen, prison rapist guy breaks out of, well, prison (or gets paroled or something) and comes after Jack, ties he and Joanne up, and well nefariously threatens them I assume. Jack's little son ends up finding the gun he had for protection and shoots the rapist dead, thus saving Jack and his family.
ANYWAY. So there's a season 6 episode where Joanne's ex-husband shows up and decides he wants custody of her kids. He proceeds to chew Jack out for having a gun in the house, refers to the shooting as "the murder", tells Jack he has anger problems (because when Jack sees the ex, a guy he doesn't know, with his son, he lunges at him, never mind the fact that his son got kidnapped two seasons ago and that's a pretty normal reaction even without that), and all the rest of this nonsense. Yeah, he probably should have had a safety on the gun but... apart from that, given the fact that the RAPIST DID COME BACK AFTER HIM, it is good that he did have the damn gun. (Not to mention, if it had been where he'd actually left it, he'd have shot the guy himself - somehow, the son swapped the real gun for a toy one and... well, it's St. Elsewhere. Its plots get a bit convoluted on occasion). But okay, so the ex is a dick.
But JOANNE JUST KIND OF SITS THERE AND AGREES. She declares they should have never come back to Boston and pretty much blames the whole thing on Jack when the ex takes off with her kids.
WAY TO BLAME THE VICTIM. You're not really making me have high hopes for the Jack/Joanne marriage at all.
