[Background] Riza grew up in solitude, her mother having died much earlier in her life and her father being an alchemist who more than often secluded himself with work in his study. She became a very independent young woman, receiving a very good education, though she tended to stray from making friends, enjoying time to herself instead. It was through her father that she met the young Roy Mustang. The alchemist-in-training became her father's pupil, no doubt spending most of his time at the Hawkeye manor, giving the two young adults many opportunities to interact. Riza's father, however, became to believe that he could not fully trust Roy. The young man had given in and become a 'dog of the military', something the older man did not approve of no matter what benefits it came with. Knowing he didn't have much time left, he left the secrets of his alchemy encoded onto his daughter's back in a beautifully large array of symbols. This tattoo, he told her, she could only show to someone worthy of learning the secret.

After her father's death, Riza stood with Roy before his grave, wondering what she would do now. Roy briefly mentioned that he hoped to one day become Fuhrer of the country, which was why he joined the military in the first place, to ensue that everyone could be protected better in the future. Riza seemed to see Roy in a new light and quickly agreed to the same dream, offering her hope that he should succeed. She then, cryptically, asks the man if she can entrust her back to him, leading to her showing him the powerful secret there and giving him the power of flame alchemy.

Joining the military so that she can both keep an eye on Mustang and because she has no where else to go, Riza is quickly shipped out to the front lines of Ishval before her training has even finished completion. Forced to use her talents with guns, the young woman finds it unnerving how easily she can kill. Still, she finds herself grieving. After the war is declared finished, Roy finds her burying a small Ishvalan child, grief evident upon her face. She questions Mustang, asking why the military, the very people trying to protect everyone, are instead killing people? How alchemy, that wonderful gift given to such few people, is being used to murder? Since it was her decision to entrust Roy with the power, Riza feels at fault, telling the man that she wants him to burn and crush her back. She would never forgive herself if another flame alchemist was born. One is enough. Though reluctant at first, he finally gives in, burning only a portion of her back, enough to hide the array there.

Mustang, promoted to Colonel class after the war ended, promoted Riza to become his 1st Lieutenant and personal bodyguard. He tells her that despite the hell they've endured, his goal is still the same as it was before. However, should he stray from the path, it is now Riza's duty to shoot him down, which he means literally. As if their own private joke, he says that he is entrusting his back to her now. Accepting the position, the woman remains by his side faithfully for a long period of time, keeping the Colonel out of trouble. The two spend much of their time together, trying to piece together the mysteries they come across on Roy's pathway to becoming Fuhrer. There is one little incident with the Homunculi Lust, in which the beautiful woman lies telling Riza she has killed Roy. Believing her superior to be dead, she flies into a rage, shooting bullet after bullet at the undying monster. After running out of ammo, she falls to her knees, tears streaming down her face. She has given up on living, there is no world for her without Roy. Of course, just as Lust moves in to kill her, Mustang appears and saves Riza's life, scolding her for giving up. He tells her that she has to continue living. It's an order.

After that, things seem to be headed straight towards Roy's future promotion when they cross paths with the current Fuhrer, King Bradley. Bradley immediately realizes what Roy is trying to do.

Splitting up the dream team, he sends each of Mustang's subordinates to different cities and towns, enlisting Riza herself as his own aide. The man knows Roy won't try anything against him when it would put his 1st Lieutenant in danger. It is in under the eyes of Bradley that Hawkeye meets the original Homunculus, Pride, who has been disguised as the Fuhrer's son for years now. Realizing just how deeply they've gotten themselves into this mess, Riza sends Roy a message in their own private code, telling him of Selim's true self. Things have gotten to the point where there is no turning back. Defecting from the military, Riza goes to the Colonel's side to aide him in his attack on Central and the Fuhrer.

Coming across the Homunculi Envy, Roy realizes the shapeshifter's true identity. He is the one who murdered his best friend, Maes Hughes. Telling his former Lieutenant to stay behind while he gives chase, the woman disobeys his direct order, following him underground. Seeing a chance to confuse the pair, Envy changes his form to look like Roy and approaches her. Already on edge, Riza points her gun at his head, smiling. She tells him that the Colonel always refers to her as 'Riza' when alone, not Lieutenant. Believing her, Envy gives himself away causing Riza to open fire after telling him that she was lying to test him.

Unable to take down the monster by herself, Roy suddenly appears and attacks Envy repeatedly, knowing that if he repeatedly kills the Homunculi like this he will eventually die. As he comes closer and closer to death, Riza finally steps back in, telling Roy to stop and allow her to finish him off. She sees how determined her superior is for revenge and she won't allow him to take it in fear he will lose himself. After all, this isn't about protecting anyone anymore. Pointing her firearm at his head, he tells her to shoot him because he isn't going to stop unless she does. As she trembles behind him, the man adds to the statement, asking the question of what will she do when he is gone. She replies that she will die as well, because she will always follow the flame alchemist. That is more than enough for Roy to realize how far he has fallen. The two fall to their knees together as Roy apologies for his behavior.

Disgusted and envious of these human emotions, Envy commits suicide just before they meet a doctor. Capturing the group, the doctor orders Roy to transmute a human corpse to open the mysterious gate of alchemy. Roy, of course, refuses which causes the men to slit Riza's throat. Dragging her to the circle, the doctor again orders Mustang to perform the forbidden alchemy. Riza, though she is losing blood fast and can't speak, sends the man a clear signal with her eyes, 'if you do human transmutation, I'll beat you to death'. Trusting her, Roy, again, refuses the doctor. As help comes to save them, Roy runs to his aide's side just as the little girl May heals her. The two share a smile, Riza glad that Mustang could read her eye signal. His only reply is that they've been together a long time.

[Personality] Riza Hawkeye is a calm, collected woman. If there is anyone who can keep their head clear in a situation that involves gunfire, actual fire, and alchemy, it is her. She is a strong-willed and sturdy individual, who is rarely shaken in any situation and easily able to see through things with her clear cut logic. She's loyal to the end when it comes to people she cares for and just as quick with thinking as she is with shooting.

All of Riza's motivations and dreams are deeply entwined with Roy Mustang's destiny. She lives to see him rise to power over the current Fuhrer, so that those who need to be protected will be. She acts as his voice of reason, helping the man to stay cool and collected in difficult situations. When he rages, she talks him down. When he is thoroughly depressed, she may massage his ego and give him a person to vent to. She is that ever constant person in his life who he can trust in and depend on without question. In reverse roles, Riza says outright that she has no reason to live if he were to die.

However, Riza is also an individual herself. While she may not have many (or any) friends outside of the military, she certainly doesn't spend all of her time in uniform, ready to be deployed. She may have a gun on her at all times, but she does 'let her hair down' while off duty.

Despite the face she puts on in battle, she is also a very caring individual as an be seen with her interactions with Winry or the child she buried after the war. She's deeply affected by other people's pain, but doesn't quite know how to console people. She's much better at saluting than comforting.

[Specialties/Abilities] Riza is good with guns. She's an unparalleled sniper, but also is just as quick up close with handguns. Her reflexes are fast, her eyes are sharp, and she rarely misses unless up against an inhuman opponent.

As a member of the military, she is incredibly fit. However, she has more stamina and endurance than physical strength.

[Affection] Though she doesn't particularly mind affection shown to her from females, all men will be shot at if they attempt to touch her inappropriately.
[Fighting] Though not of the greatest physical strength, Riza is a valued member of the military for a reason. She's agile and has her firearms with her at all times. You will rarely (if ever) catch her unguarded and she is not afraid to do what she must to protect herself.

[Other Facts] She is Roy's conscience cause he obviously doesn't have one.

She has a dog named Black Hayate who she potty trained with her gun. It is very effective.
