Nero lounged back in his chair, dark eyes glimmering as they watched Vulcan collapse in on itself, over and over again. He got a shiver of delight, knowing that even his screen would remember it in less detail than Ambassador Spock's memory. How it must be playing for him now.

“Beautiful,” he murmured to himself as the twisting maw created by the red matter made itself known. By now, the blackhole had swallowed the central star of Vulcan’s solar system, but that was of no matter. He had other things to think of.

He thought of Earth, that green, lush planet that had been vital in the Federation and in creating the monster that had let his world perish. Starfleet command had to be crippled. He had destroyed several of their best ships, but they had more, and the Enterprise had slipped through his grasp;

Spock’s greatest friends had come from that planet. Let him see Earth die, as well.

He stood, ready to begin, when Ayel approached him, worry obvious in his eyes.

“What is it?” he snapped, certain this was going to ruin his good mood.

“We’ve intercepted transmissions, sir, from a Klingon vessel.”

“And?” he asked, impatient. Ayel swallowed.

“They are debating war with Romulus.” Nero whirled on him, gripping the front of his jacket.

“What? They’re going to attack?”

“I’m not sure, Nero. But a war with the Klingons at this point in Romulus’ history- Romulus cannot handle it. Half their ships have Klingon parts, not to mention the state of the Empire-” His first officer’s tone was pleading, but it did not need to be. Nero could not see Romulus in pain, not again. He would rip the entire Klingon Empire apart if he had to.

He carefully let Ayel go, his mind whirling. Even with this ship and Romulus' armies, they could not get close enough to the Klingon homeworld to destroy it with the red matter.

“They don’t. But we do. And we’ll give it to them. We’ll give them Narada’s records, and everything from the Vulcan ship." He spun on his heel, starting to pace. “We can protect them while they build new ships - a handful of ships like our own could destroy an entire fleet in seconds."

“Nero," Ayel interrupted. “They’d have to take the Narada apart to figure out how she works. No one on this ship could give you instructions on how to build it from scratch. And the Vulcan ship- we still know next to nothing about it, after two and a half decades. The security is too high. It took us fifteen years just to figure out how to access the red matter.” Nero halted in his steps, a frown crossing his face as he processed the information.

“There are scientists smart enough to figure it out. It may take geniuses, but we’ll find them. They’ll work to save our planet.” He paused, and a smile crossed his face.

“In fact, I know of a genius that would be of great use. Perhaps I as a bit too hasty, wanting to destroy him.”

“Ambassador Spock? We tried getting information out of him already. He’s too strong.” Nero just laughed at his first officer, taking a seat again.

“He would have been the best choice, yes. But you’re forgetting something, Ayel. The elder might have been too strong for us. But with youth comes weakness.” He leaned his hand on his chin, his smile widening. “Track the Enterprise. We need to borrow their science officer.”
