I looked at a few places today. It's between two, really. One was this awesome, spacious place in Silver Lake in a nice neighbourhood with a GREAT view of downtown. Like, seriously amazing view. The downside: among the hipsters

I know! However, being near Amoeba would take away the super-spendy factor as we could look all the time and it is right there. Being next to the Arclight on top of that could be rather dangerous though.
I'd go with Silver Lake location, myself. That much space is worth the plumbing and the hipsters, IMO. You can always have someone in to look at the plumbing. And it's not like you have to invite the hipsters in for tea or anything.
I've lived in a place where parking is like a bloodsport- it sucked! Waaay stressful.
Well, that wouldn't be likely as we would both take public transport to work (near Metro station and Paul will work across from one as well). Apparently we would be fine parking during the weekdays -- it is just Saturdays when it gets harder to find space. If that fails, we can rent space from the Arclight. Still, the lack of parking is not good.
Not necessarily, but I just don't want to discount it for space and parking purposes only (especially considering that the other one isn't too small except for the kitchen). Location and nearness to work matters as well. Plus, it's access is inside a 1930's art deco building. I like having to go into a building to get to my apartment.
However, the kitchen is rather small and the view is not exciting. Part of it also boils down to kitchen vs. bathroom. hehe
Ah well. I can understand that any self-respecting modern woman would want to choose a decent bathroom over a kitchen.
But still...VIEW! And I have to tell you that I'm imagining the Silver Lake place as being like Cordy's apartment. Does it come with resident ghost, by any chance?
I'm with Anne. You seem to be already set on the Sunset and Vine place. But isn't that area pretty skeezy? I lived in LA for 7 years and drove by Sunset and Vine all the time. I really never imagined that being a place to live. Won't it be noisy at night?
Plus, you have to think about parking for friends who visit and if you ever have parties.
Kitchen vs. bathroom is difficult, but from my experience, the kitchen is most important. Counter space, cabinet space, walkaround space - if it's not there you will seriously want to put a bomb to it very soon.
I guess I'm not much help, because for me the area inside my home is more important than the neighbors since I don't fraternize with them anyway.
Anyway, when did you live in LA? Not too long ago I would not feel safe in Hollywood, but now I can walk around that area and not mind. Bits of LA have changed a lot in the last ten years, amazingly so. Hell, it's even changed A LOT since I moved to London and came back.
Plus, you have to think about parking for friends who visit and if you ever have parties.I joked with them that they would have to buy something at Amoeba to get their tickets validated when they park at Arclight. Seriously though, even with the parking issues it wouldn't be that bad as I have noticed there is a lot of parking surrounding the block I am on. It's just Paul and I are not guaranteed a spot outside our building. With the Silver Lake place we are allocated two spots, but we might have issues with parties as we would be in the hills and would have to have our friends all over if we didn't have space near our place. However, when it comes to partying -- it's a better place

I moved from there in 2002, so it's been 7 years almost.
You do have to evaluate based on your preferences and it's clear we value different things. :) I would not want to be in that busy, touristy area, but it sounds like you thrive on that kind of environment. Plus, this isn't going to be the place you live forever. It sounds like it would be a cool place to be while you're young and still in party mode. You can move to Silver Lake when all you want to do is come home and crash. :)

Still, fun times. Just smaller space.

And hipsters RULE the area, and I find LA hipsters to be the most annoying of any I have encountered.
Still, the size and view are a major plus. It's odd since both places are good and bad in different ways. There isn't really a straight comparison.

Hollywood
Silver Lake
The Silver Lake photos do NOT do justice to the view. It's odd, that. One would think the AMAZING view would be a focus.
The kitchen vs bathroom thing... I know. Like, I mean, good kitchen space, but dude -- nice, hot shower with good pressure
