What do you use to get rid of the lawn in that square of dirt, and then keep the grass from coming back? I want to do that in my backyard. There are cow pastures next door tho and tons of weeds will always be coming through the air. Maybe I should plant tall bushes.

Grass doesn't come back, but weeds do. They are first to repopulate dug up grounds. But active digging is my suggestion. You could also cover it with plastic or hay, whatever that might work for you.

But yes, planting tall bushes doesn't sound like a bad idea. Big problems with weeds?

Yeah the lawn is like half grass and half weeds. :p Since we're surrounded by pastures there's not much we can do. Once the new roommates come I'll have helpers in the yard though, that will be exciting. My current roommate is a little frail to do much hard work.

You should sow things like clover and such. I dunno what you mean by weeds (tall growing? Small growing?) but clover is a good soil reclaimer.
