Author’s (OOC) Note: Alright, this is all Nic's sad!Simon's fault. He made his mun write two beautiful ficlets about the RP we did where Kaylee died, that he could Mal talking. So, I would like to take a moment to thank Simon Tam and tell him that he is a boob. That is all.

-----
Captain Malcolm Reynolds was sitting in the pilot's chair. His left leg was crossed across his right knee and his right hand was on his temple. His gaze was set out the front view window. Out into the black.

It was quiet. Just the sounds of Serenity's soft hums and the voices of his loved ones in his head for company. Everyone else was asleep.

I'm a leaf on the wind.
Wash. What a character. He was about to listen to Zoë and never hire him. He usually trusted Zoë’s feelings on things. But, this? The man had a mile of references that just couldn't and shouldn't be ignored. They were lucky to get him on board.

He saved their lives countless times and got them out of the worse pickles imaginable. Wash was brilliant, there was no other word for him. Maybe, that was why Zoë fall in love with him. The caring soul underneath all the wise ass comments.

I don't care what you believe. Just believe it.
Sheppard Book. What a character. He should have listened to his conscience and never let him board. Course, he had no choice. He had no idea he was a Sheppard until they were flyin'. Still, they were lucky to have him on board.

The wise old man. The one with all the answers. Even if they weren't answers Mal particularly liked, they were still answers. The preacher never did successed in bringing God back into Mal's life, at least in Mal's eyes, but he did make Mal believe. And he still does.

I love my Captain.
Lit'Kaylee. What a character. He never had any doubt about letting her on board. Well, not after she fixed Serenity in two seconds with the back of her dress still undone. For five years, she kept Serenity up in the sky. They were lucky to have her on board.

Her smile. The one that made you smile no matter how down you felt. How helpless it all seemed. She was his mei-mei. He loved her. She kept his boat in the air and the sweetness in the room. The naive sweetness that only Kaylee could have. The Doc loved her. They all did, but nobody like the Doc. Mal would even admit that Simon loved Kaylee more than all of the crew put together.

The boy is lost now that she is gone. They all are. Lost in the woods again, but this time Mal can not see his clear path.

"Uncle Mal?"

The small voice breaks through the memories and he wipes his eyes with his hand before turning in the chair to face the small five-year old child. Nightgown clad and bare-feet, hugging her teddy bear. Auburn-brown hair, shoulder length and bright brown eyes full of concern for her Uncle and Captain.

"Hey there, ginger snap. What's th'news?" he asks softly. "Shouldn’t ya be in bed?"

She shakes her head. "Nope. Its mornin'. Daddy's makin' waffles! You want some!?" she asks brightly.

A warm smile. "Naw. I don' think so." he says with a small shake of his head.

Miranda pouts and puts one hand on her hip, "Aw! Come on, Cap'n! Daddy's found out how t'make th'protin taste like..." she drops the act and looks shifty eyed around the bridge before patting up to Mal and motioning him down. Mal smirks and leans down so Miranda and cup his ear and whisper her secret to him, "Strawairres." She pulls away with eyes sparkling with excitement looking up at her Captain.

Mal chuckles. "Alright, Mair-bear. Tell Daddy t'make me some."

Miranda gives a happy squee and kisses Mal's cheek before skipping out of the bridge screaming "DADDY!" at the top of her lungs.

Mal flinches. "KID! QUIT YELLIN' OR YOU'LL MAKE AUNT SADIE THROW UP!"

A pause and the answer. "SORRY CAP!"

Mal chuckles softly with a shake of his head before he stands to head into the galley.
