Cowardice, on the other hand, stems mainly from some kind of material bargain, or simple fear and intimidation.

It really is determined by the person, and their sense of self-worth and pride.

If you push a man hard enough, for long enough, he will either invariably die or do his level best to save himself. If a man is given no other recourse, or believes his cause to be more right than another's, there is little stopping him from throwing that comradeship away in favor preserving his own flesh. No one is so selfless in this day and age.

I'd say humanity grows more and more self-righteous with each passing century. Which will, invariably, lead to its self-destruction. The only thing keeping humans alive is their society, or perhaps lackthereof, in some cases. Take that away...
...And humanity will fall.
