( he pauses, and just stops to stare. )

[She pauses and looks a little confused.]

I don't really have friends.

[A slight pause of her own.]

Very well. I thought I would ask.

...I mean, I never have. Before. So I don't know how it would work.

[There's a near invisible shrug.]

I have only had one person who called himself my friend. Others are co-workers, my guardian and acquaintances, so I would not be the best person to ask.
