First Gear - Voice

[Admittedly, the first part of her arrival does not go smoothly. It takes her more than ten minutes to leave the glowing platform, to look down at her hands and realize that they are hers. Her skin is so smooth and even; her fingers, five instead of three, feel stubby - too short. When she finally calms down enough to leave the oddly comforting ( Read more... )

[ Charles quite enjoys welcoming others to the City now that he feels he's caught his own bearings after a good month. He's smiling when the video clicks on. ]

Welcome to the City.

I have, ah, certainly experienced the same myself. It's... ah--an unfortunate side-effect from the Porter.

I have experienced alternate transport before, but this was different.

Your welcome is appreciated, though. I'm afraid I've been rude - my name is Tali'Zorah vas Normandy.

[ Charles raises his eyebrows at the name. Unusual, but lovely. ]

That is.. a rather lovely name. I've not heard anything like it before.

My name is Charles Xavier. It is a pleasure to meet you.

[A-ah people complimenting her, she's not used to this. She starts her explanation quickly once he's introduced himself.]

It's not so unique, really. Tali is the only part of my name that's my own. 'Zorah designates me as a daughter of that family, and vas Normandy the ship to which I belong. It's just a way to keep track of people, really.

I ... suppose, if you count this as meeting. Voice communication can still be very impersonal.

You are quite right, I suppose. Regardless, I am certainly meeting you.

...that is true.

[She glances down at the communicator in her hands.]

Do you have any advice for a newcomer, Charles Xavier?

[ There's a soft laugh on the other end as he seems to be thinking about what to say. ]

That I can think of off-hand? Ah, not much, unfortunately. However, everyone I have met here has been very kind. Do not be afraid of ask questions if you have them, that would be my first recommendation.

Have you been shown to your apartment?

I was sent a map by a girl named Annabeth. I can navigate myself from this building.

[Thank goodness for practical tactical skills.]

I expect the apartment number is on the back of these tags. Am I right?

Ah, that is good, then!

Yes, you are quite right. You apartment number is on the back of your tag. They are also your way to withdraw money when you need it.

I suspected as much. They're quite -- complex for their size.

It's not on-par with the communicators.

[Which means that perhaps someone is keeping something from them.]

There is quite a lot of technology packed into some tiny things here. [ He chuckles just a bit after he says this. ]

I'm honestly surprised I can navigate them.

Ah, no -- I'd meant more that these communicators aren't at all complicated.

They're downright primitive compared to some of the things from home.

[ That just makes him chuckle more, sounding quite embarrassed. ]

I am from a time much older than your own, then, I would venture to guess. I can hardly handle most of this technology myself.

What time are you from, exactly?

2185.

From what I gather, we're in the early part of the 21st century?

[ Charles just blinks at that and looks properly horrified and surprised. ]

Y-Yes, ah--yes, we are. Though I am not from that time, myself.

My apologies. It can be difficult to adjust to new technologies quickly if you are not used to it.

[The quarians did it by necessity -- if there were new parts that would help their decrepit ships, they needed to be able to integrate them as quickly as possible. That was where Tali often came in; her experience on the first Normandy ship had given her a veritable plethora of new information to return home with.]
