I've been somewhat quiet for the last few days, settling into matters, and I've been trying to learn about this new world and everything it holds. But there is one thing, really just the one, that I have to ask about ( Read more... )

( for a moment, she just laughs. )

It's just a fashion, really. Two thousand years ago and everyone was in things that were more like skirts or dresses. And five hundred years ago it was gowns for the women and hose for the men.

And why did they change from hose? Hose was so much more comfortable!

[He's obviously used to hose.]

You know, I'm not sure. It's been awhile since I studied history. Probably something to do with the rise of industry?

My people are plenty industrious, both those I was raised with and my own Rivans.

I don't see why industry would require uncomfortable clothing.

I couldn't tell you. But then, my people are warriors who wear any number of different things and call it armor, so I'm not really one to judge.

...armor's armor, isn't it?

[He has some very strange mental pictures going on in his head right now.]

You'd think that, but my sisters can make bodices and skirts look fiercer than your typical knight's armor.

I've seen something similar, honestly. Most of my wife's female family, in fact.

My wife is a dryad. [Which had made producing an heir a work of EXTREME GARDENING]

They're extremely protective of their wood.

I'm unfamiliar with the name. But the way you speak of them reminds me of the Dryads of the Wood.

The two groups do sound similar. There are a lot of dryads in stories in my world, but they tend to be more peaceful than Amazons.

But back to the pants issue, there's quite a few types more comfortable than jeans. I'm sure you'll be able to find a happy-medium.

Unfortunately, they like me wearing jeans where I work, black ones specifically. I'm sure I'll figure something out; I just don't really see the sense in it.

Oh, where are you working, then?

Kitchen work at a pub near the apartments. Mostly I'm scrubbing dishes and clearing tables.
