[ How on Earth does Charles reply to these words? Mere evenings ago, he would have been so prepared on the subject. But now? Charles is just frowning, wringing his hands on the video feed and remaining quiet for a long moment. There's a lot to say. ]

You know I wish I knew, ah-Mrs Squirrel. [ There is an odd sense to his voice, and he's frowning further, wondering if he's addressed her properly. ]

[She has not heard anyone in the City call her 'Mrs.' before, having told most of them to use the word 'Mother' instead out of habit, but using it is very polite of him, and so she chooses not to correct him. In fact, right now, it feels safer to be spoken that way than as a mother, as she does not presently feel very much like she is being a good one.]

I did see you at the ball, Charles Xavier. I believe you were with your... [Mother Squirrel pauses here, uncertain as to how she should speak of Erik. She saw that he'd bid on Charles for a date, and that they'd gone together. And a creature would have to be blind to have missed either their fuss and the floating bench or Eddie's glass-breaking rage match. In the end, she chooses to use the safest word she can think of, not wanting to assume anything.] ...friend.

Of what are you unsure?

[ Charles just smiles at the term used, though it does not escape him the hesitance with which she says such a thing. He smiles very gently, and he slides his fingers through his hair as he stares into the communicator, finally looking back into it. It no longer feels foolish speaking to a squirrel, and he's glad for that. ]

I think, at times, I am perhaps as baffled by the concept as you are. Though I've been reassured that-it is love, and not perversion that drives such passions.
