Oh. Well. I'm sure we would've only gotten so far without a leader so effective to guide us.

[ she knits her brows and glances down, she doesn't want to outright say donna's wrong, but she's not sure how much she can agree, either ]

I'm uncertain of the truth in that. Things rarely seem to turn out right in the end, in my experience. At least not without some effort being made to steer events, and such efforts can tend to bring it in either direction.

Well, that's what we'd call making you own fate. People of strong will can do that, I think. For others, it's easier to imagine that things will turn out a certain way whether they try to change it or not.

And even then, paradox space has a way of righting itself so that anything that ultimately happens is what was meant to happen, and whatever else may happen strays from the alpha and creates a doomed offshoot.

Doomed offshoot, huh... ( and that sort of hits a bit too close to home, so donna's thoughtfully silent for a moment. )

Well, in any case, I think you can think of it this way: it may be fate, or karma, or any number of things influencing what happens, but if you focus on what you can control and accept that some things are beyond your capabilities, you'll be happier.

[ she could fuss and disagree with this, as she'd be inclined to, as happiness isn't something she expects to see in her immediate or eventual future, but she realizes donna will only worry further and continue this if she does. and so, with discomfort written all over her face, she attempts to lie ]

Aright. I suppose it's worth an attempt.

I don't mean to disagree, but I can't help feeling curious as to how you could be so convinced of this fact.

( donna laughs a little, then shrugs as she thinks for a moment. )

Because... I've been through the ringer, and I'm still here. So I guess I just have to believe that things'll end up alright.

My continued existence is really the least of my worries, nor is it the sole quality required for being "alright".

Maybe not the only one. But it's always the start.

And what of the ensuing issues that only serve to further complicate that existence?

A complicated existence is still better than no existence at all. Trust me.

If you must insist on the sincerity of this point. Though there are moments when that doesn't seem to entirely be the case.

As long as you're alive, there's a chance for it to get better. Can't say the same if you're not around, can you?

Well, how alive I in fact am is a matter that's subject to some debate.
