SKIPPING RIGHT TO THE END, OH YEAH osborncomplex April 15 2011, 05:10:31 UTC
Oh my god. Harry is trying not to look traumatized as he makes his way slowly out of the theater. He's desperately relieved that no one from work took him up on his invitation to see the musical... but really that's a terrible thing to think, so while waiting to see if Jessica or Katurian will show up, he chews his bottom lip and goes over what he might say to either of them. It's not difficult to think of things to say, it's just difficult to say them with confidence, which is really 99% of all polite lies. Jessica will need to be complimented, of course, which he has no trouble doing, but Katurian could be trickier. Probably, though, Katurian would be just as pleased with the truth as a truth-bending compliment.

Hopefully they won't be together.

Jessica bounded toward the lobby-area as soon as the curtain call was over, determined to be the first cast member to meet and greet their adoring public. Of course, she zeroed right in on Harry, grinning from ear to ear as she enthusiastically approached, still in costume and stage make-up.

"Hi, Harry!" She beamed triumphantly, fluffing her hair oh-so casually.

"Hey," he greeted her, finding it easy to smile in response, even if it was slightly surreal to see her up close in costume and stage makeup. "You did great. You didn't look nervous at all."

And he could genuinely admire that, because he would've been pretty nervous if he'd been onstage, even if the musical hadn't been seriously weird.

"I wasn't nervous, not even a little!" Jessica giggled brightly, giving him an exaggerated bow. She liked being the center of attention. Taking center stage and hogging the spotlight came naturally to her, and even though the lead roles had gone to the patients, she'd made the most of her few lines and chorus part. "Did you like it, Harry? What did you think of the play?"

[Katurian keeps his weight on the wall behind him, his crutches propped up by his side. He's still beaming. There were mistakes, yes, and a necessity for some improvisation (he isn't even going to think about the cats - let the Major suffer, take the blame), but for the most part, it was a success. It was invigorating. One of the few good things he's ever experienced. He chatters excitedly with anyone who comes up to speak with him.]

[The Major is smiling just a little as he approaches, only a small corner of his mouth twitching upwards.]

So, Herr Katurian. What did you think of all that?

[Katurian's smile flickers, but doesn't fall as the Major approaches. It's a definite improvement -- he usually shifts to a scowl almost instantly.]

You died brilliantly.

[The Major's smile abruptly expands across his face. He really doesn't mind dying very much, whether on stage or in reality.]

Yes, my last gasps did ring out quite clearly, didn't they? Which do you believe played out better, the strangulation or the impalement?

[For a brief, somewhat sickening moment, Katurian likes the Major. Only when he realizes this does his smile fade. Oh. Eugh.]

Both were good. [Noncommittal. But then:] Considering the, um, distractions, I think you put together the ending quite-- quite nicely. I think you did a great job.

[HE HAS HIS MOMENTS. Kind of. Sometimes. Rarely. Okay not really.]

It was quite a challenge, but I have had to deal with far worse. Although- [His smile becomes twisted into a sneer] -to be humiliated in such an absurd manner is still far from acceptable.

[The sneer turns back to a smile] Still, I do thank you for your praise, Herr Katurian! And also for creating such an enjoyable dark and twisted story for us all to play out on this stage. You have quite a talent, you know.

[Oh screw you, Major. Screw you. He tries to keep his expression steady, but it's obvious that Katurian values that kind of praise from just about anyone. Even supervillains.]

Yeah. I do. [Pff, modesty. Beat.] I wouldn't say you were humiliated. Exactly.

I do beg to differ. I have known retreat and defeat and exile, I have seen my homeland destroyed and occupied, and I have known what it is to crawl through mingled mud and offal to avoid enemy fire. It was not the greatest of humiliations, but it certainly was one!

Hey. [He lifts his hand at Katurian as he approaches.] That was pretty amazing. I can't even imagine how you put that together.

[He doesn't recognize Harry by sight (and the voice has yet to occur to him), but his grin widens anyway.]

Yes. Well, um, it was a lot for just a few weeks, it was a lot to do, but everyone was very hardworking and-- yes. Thank you.

The Major walks stiffly off stage with what tiny amount of his dignity still remains to him, leaving his mewling entourage behind.

"Attention please," he announces once backstage. "I must speak to our costume expert. Who will direct me to her?"
