The crier wandered near the entrance to the Royal Palace, ringing his bell loudly and crying out:

"Hear ye, hear ye! King to raise taxes again! Living in great luxury as your children continue to starve!"

"Quietly?" Victor stopped ringing his bell and settled his hands on his hips. "Why, when he are so sorely mistreated by our wicked king, quiet is how he thrives!" He spread out his arms and turned back to the crowds, shouting even louder. "All of the kingdom deserves to hear!"

Attracted by the loud bell rings, a leper clad in bandages and loose robes crept over to the crier, one eye peering out from his bandages with a mad intensity. He grabbed for an arm with one of his hands, flush with the look of disease, trying to stop the incessant ringing.

"Curse you, that's loud," he muttered, voice raspy, "that damnable bell is too loud."

The crier snatched his hand away, and had to stop ringing in the process. He took a few steps back to look t the leper with his arms crossed.

"Why, of course it's loud, you! I have t get the people's attention, after all!"

"It splits my head in twain," the leper hissed, visible eye still enraged and bloodshot. Again he tried to grab for the bell, seemingly uncaring that it had stopped ringing. "Silence it, lest I must silence it for you."

"Perhaps you have considered a modicum of wax in your ears?" He gestured to the side of he leper's head. "As it protected Odysseus' crew from the Sirens, so would it spare you the sounds of my bell!"

"I would sooner solve the problem at its root," he growled, stepping back and covering one ear. "What right have you all to be merry while I must deafly retreat?"

He regarded the leper with some confusion. "Surely, you wouldn't have your suffering be felt throughout the populace, would you? But lo, I have my work before me, and I cannot put an end to it on your account alone, the matters are of far too heavy a gravity."

He turned toward the market and gestured to the other man to follow. "But if it would settle this dispute, I will acquire some beeswax for you, that we might both continue our individual work in peace!"

"Why not? Should I suffer, why not shall all?" He sneered, tugging his robes tighter around his diseased flesh. Still, he followed upon being beckoned, warily watching the crier and the other Faire-goers alike.

"It may not be right that you suffer, sir," he said as he slowly glared at the leper, "but neither would it be right to cause that suffering to others as a way of lashing out. We must cling together in times like this, try to relieve each other's suffering!"

He glanced around the market for the right booth. Ah! That looked like the beekeeper's there.

"I'd sooner prefer instilling even justice for all," he growled, although still he followed. "Man may not heal, but he may always become infected."

"Bah, you'd have us all damned if you had your way! Oh, beekeeper!"

He waltzed up to the beekeeper's booth an negotiated his way into a modest amount of wax.

The leper didn't move, halting his walk and shrinking back a few steps into his robes. He gave a wary look to the wax.

"Nay, I want not that in my ears."

The crier rolled his eyes. He was doing his best to compromise here, but the leper was not helping.

"Well, it is quite impossible for me to cease the ringing of my bell, sir. It is vital to my work!" He held the packet to the leper with a scowl. "So, you take this, or you find elsewhere to beg. I will even do you the favor of trying to avoid you throughout the day, if that will help the matter!"
