Ringing his bell furiously, the crier approaches the king with a royal decree outstretched in his hand.

"My liege! I was hoping you might like to speak on all these new taxes, perhaps clarify why you feel them necessary at this time?"

Norman raised his eyebrow, crossing one royal leg over the other. This was the fellow his guard had told him of, he suspected; no matter. Better that he handle such affairs on his own.

"We have of late been scourged by pirates. The taxes are to build defense and a stronghold with which to protect our town."

Nay! But this was no bard, only the town's crier, and he could not be satisfied with announcing the royal decrees without speaking his mind in turn.

"Which is why you deplete only the coffers of peasants while you and your noblemen keep your purse-strings pulled tight? Surely the aristocracy would be at just as much disadvantage should pirates ravage our shores! Surely they have as much reason to contribute to these efforts!"

"I feel perhaps you have come into grave misinformation; I have besought the aid of Lords as well, crier. My own purse-strings are not of peasant concern, regardless. I suggest you remove yourself."

He made a shooing gesture with his hand.

But the crier was steadfast, defiant. He would be heard.

"Have you besought their aid as well? Surely a mere token, as they continue to gallivant in their finery while the people want for even a morsel to fill their staving bellies."

He waved a hand with a flourish to indicate the palace itself. "While our king abides no need of his own, of course!"

"I said remove thyself. Get thee gone," Norman said, more forcefully this time. His eyes had narrowed, and he glance to the side, looking for his guards. He wanted to snap his fingers for them to carry the crier away, perhaps to the stocks, though he decided to not be so hasty. There was time enough. If the man got too belligerent, all the better to let him be dragged off.

"I have spoken on the matter. If you wish to question my policies further you risk treason, sir."

He gave the king a hard stare before finally turning on his heel and marching through the doors. He would have need of a more anonymous method of questioning if he hoped to speak the news that needed to be heard.

Perhaps...a mask?

Once the crier had slunk back, King Norman watched him for another moment or two before directing his thoughts elsewhere. His guard was on the look out, after all.
