The crier spotted the stranger as he passed by and immediately stopped ringing his bell. Tying it to his belt, he ran to catch up with the stranger, pacing himself beside him.

"Hail and well met, sir! I'm afraid I've never heard of such a place where the people where clothes like unto yours, perhaps you might enlighten me?"

Peter blinked and slowed a bit, despite his resolution to keep searching until he found someone else who hadn't been affected, or better yet whoever or whatever was doing the effecting. The more information he gathered about the way this worked, the easier it would be to figure out how to fix it, after all.

He weighed the merits of telling the truth -- that he'd grown up just a couple of miles away from here, or close enough -- and going in circles, versus spinning a yarn about exotic, far-away climes that the other man would find believable.

"I'm from Queens," he said after a few moments. "Everyone dresses like this there."

"Queens?" This prospect confused the crier, and he tapped his chin as he attempted to puzzle it out. "We have no queens here, only a king." A king the crier was no fan of, either. "Do you mean perhaps that your mother was from royalty?"

"No," Peter sighed, "it's a ... town. Called Queens, but nobody remembers why. It's only a couple of miles from here, for crying out loud!"

"I see. I do not believe I have been to this 'Queens' before." And this surprised him, as the crier was a rather well-traveled man. "Have they a king there? Or, as may be more likely, a queen? Who rules them?"

Peter snorted. The idea of New Yorkers submitting to royal rule ... well. "Nobody. It's a democracy. Though, I guess if you stretch the definitions a little, we have a mayor and a council -- both elected by the people."

"Democracy? It sounds splendid!" He wouldn't mind going there if he didn't have so much work to do here. "But tell me, what do you do when you the person elected turns out to be the wrong choice?"

He can't help but smile at the other man's excitement. "Well, the usual process is that we elect someone we think is the right choice, or at least the least wrong choice, and then we spend the years until the next election complaining about them whether or not they've actually done anything to complain about. It's part of the system."

"Until the next election? You mean to tell me that it's only a limited appointment?" How very novel, this "modern" political system!

"See, the point is to keep any one candidate from accomplishing as little as possible," Peter said innocently. Well, given the state of American politics these days, it was only a slight stretch of the truth.

Now this he just could not grasp! "What then is the purpose of the office?"
