and so she'd hop from demonspawn to demonspawn, ripping through them as she could, and generally making a mess of her new Official Team Space jacket, and the little fairy wings she wore with it. someone let a small girl on the front line, and she was doing her damnedest to slow the advance, but there were just too many of them ]

He'd spotted the girls struggle, presently, and teleports directly into the fray. It's messy. It's sad to see. They will dismiss this wave and she will be sent on her way; he is newly determined of that. He tells her so much, even as he slashes upward on the first creature to approach. ]
You should not be here, Miss Maryam.

hopping from that one to her next target, her chainsaw appears in her hand to help make quick work of it. ]
I highly disagree, Mr. Wagner. There is perhaps no more fitting place for me to be located at present. You, however, stand a far greater chance of being harmed in this, and that would be undesirable.

The sudden appearance of the chainsaw, horrific business... Just another thing he won't bother worrying about right now. He's a bit busy weaving around the monsters, attempting quick and deadly blows while he attempts to negotiate the girl from the situation. ]
I do not fear harm. I estimate that you do not, either. Still-- [ Hold on, sorry. He dispatches another and it takes a moment of his concentration. ] You are very young. The general consensus is that young people should not be exposed to such things.

Were that the case, I'm afraid you're some sweeps late, particularly considering the months I experienced prior to my arrival here in the City. I am no stranger to "such things" as it is, and am in a unique position to handle them that few others are similarly granted.
It is therefore my duty to be here rather than elsewhere. If I am not, than innocents will come to harm, and that I find unacceptable.

[ This punctuated by a hard kick to his opponent of the moment. The thing lurches oddly, but doesn't fall, and Kurt curses under his breath. The horde members seem fairly squishy. Landing a hit that impacts is difficult work.
He opens his mouth to continue speaking, but the thing is upright again and not moving immediately forward, pausing in it path, mouth open... There's the briefest pause as he's unsure whether to follow through with an attack, simply move, or teleport out of the way altogether.
Teleport, he thinks, run it through the skull and stay above them all for a moment. Christ above, what a thing... And, as he thinks it, move, it ( ... )

she falls to her knees panting as she looks down at her hands, gnarled, torn, and burnt to such a degree one could almost have trouble recognizing what they were. she's glowing like a giant light bulb at this point, but she can't manage to slow her breathing or make the pain stop. really, when she thinks about it, trying to control her glow should be the least of her worries at the moment. ]

Then he does what he should have done in the first place, curse him for a fool, and he grabs up the girl and teleports away. Somebody else can slow the advance for a moment. They're now atop the nearest building, knee-jerk point of safety. ]
Gott im Himmel, mein Kind! Sie sollten nicht-- Ach! Are you mad?! Are you... I will not ask if you are all right. You are going to a doctor.

on top of the building, she breaks free with a surprising strength and hesitates at the ledge, what's left of her fingers being unable to grasp the threads to open a portal below. she turned before fully absconding, shouting back at him: ] I have no need of a medical professional!
[ and with that she dove off the roof, slowing her fall by hopping between facades and sliding as she could. it would be much easier if she had use of her hands, but she'd just have to make do. it wasn't her choice to travel to the top of the roof and away from the easiest prey ( ... )

[ Again, sudden actions surprise him, and there's another wave of panic as his watches her dive from the roof. Even in other worlds, full of people from even more other worlds, one's conceptions of how things work don't easily change. Young girls should not be made to fight monsters, if avoidable, they shouldn't have their hands burnt off, and they shouldn't dive from buildings.
All in all, it's turning out to be a dazzling attempt at forcing his own logic onto the situation. He's at something of a loss by the time she lands and immediately... What? Feeds upon one of the things?
The impulse is, again, to teleport in and assist. He recognizes a healing factor (or something like it) when he sees one, at least. The monsters will be held off to the best of his ability until she's finished this gruesome business, and then... ]
I still advise strongly that you see somebody! Or at least move out of this mess!

That would be inadvisable.
If I were absent, someone else would need fight in my stead, someone unlikely to have my same capabilities with responding to harm. Perhaps even you.
[ hold on she's gotta tear this thing's throat out and it's impolite to talk with your mouth full ] For me to shirk my duties would result in another's suffering, or even death. I'm incapable of dying again, I can withstand the harm, it's better for that suffering to be inflicted on me.

The area has been largely evacuated. There are more willing to fight and, I assure you, they are plenty capable. The absence of one will not determine the outcome here.
[ More slicing. He knows, still, that the argument is not very convincing. One cannot simply tell stubborn children that they'd rather not see them hurt, not when there was a good deal on the line. ]
Aside, I think your abilities might be put to better use in moving people around.

[ she will absolutely not budge on this point. on the list of kanaya maryam's priorities, she isn't at the bottom because she didn't even make the cut. no topic could possibly be more irrelevant to her than self-preservation
she risks the strain on her hand to open a new portal, swinging on the thread to give her a good position to kick a monster behind kurt in the head ]
As for my dominion over Space, one might raise a similar question to you, Mr. Wagner. For myself, I have previously participated in the evacuation as one in my position could, but given the situation as it is, my duties here take priority until such a time as bystanders and spectators in the path of destruction should occur. I will by no means neglect them in such circumstances, but for the time being I'm where I'm most needed.

Realization of the conversation's lost cause rings (a little bitterly) true to home. Again, he slices into the next monster with more gore resulting than is perhaps necessary, and he pulls the feet of another from under its body with his tail before running it through. He is an obsolete man with obsolete ideals. Silly him, of course, for thinking that even odd and powerful children from other worlds should not be subject to this.
And now there is... What? Compromise? Should that even be acceptable? ]
I have been evacuating those who remain, yes. I stopped here predominately out of concern for your well-being, but I see it is not completely warranted.

[ it's okay kurt that is in fact exactly as fucked up as it sounds, but nothing will make fussyfangs here any fussier than when you fuss at her about it.
and with the test she'd made with the portal being successful, she feels confident enough to take her chainsaw back out and cut a bloody swath out of the approaching enemy ]
