The knot inside of Scott's stomach was twisting so much it threatened to make him throw up. He never did as well when things were long and drawn out as he did with snap decisions. And he had known this would be coming the moment Jean came to the city. It had (mostly) nothing to do with Emma and everything to do with the fact that Scott knew he and Jean were over. Perhaps from the moment he took the place of Nate Grey and bonded with Apocalypse his marriage was over. It wasn't that the possession changed him, but it made him see things in a whole new light.
The man that Jean Grey loved hadn't existed for a long time, and Scott couldn't be that man anymore. He resented feeling like that awkward, insecure teenager, and he knew that if he stayed with Jean he'd come to resent her for making him feel that way.
He had left her a note on the mirror of the bathroom saying that they needed to talk tonight. He couldn't even tell her in person that this was coming, too afraid he'd either lose the nerve or break down and do it then. But he needed time to steel his resolve and fully come to terms with what this would mean.
So he waited on the bed in their room for her to come in for the night so he could break the news.
