Canon: Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver (GAMEVERSE).
Character: Lance, the Dragon Master.
Timeline: During the Elite Four Johto League matches, at the conclusion of HeartGold/SoulSilver.

Personality: Lance is an extraordinarily patient individual. As one of the rare Dragon Masters in Kanto (and Johto), Lance possesses an unusual talent with Pokemon, which speaks to his patient and determined nature, given his specialty of choice. Dragon-type Pokemon are notoriously hard to raise, capture, and tame for battle, but Lance, with three Dragonite as his disposal, seems to have mastered the art with a kind hand and a firm discipline. He is never displayed as cruel to Pokemon and is known all throughout the lands of Kanto and Johto as a heroic trainer that puts Pokemon’s needs before even his own.

However patient and disciplined Lance is goes out the window when people - and Pokemon - important to him are injured. Pokemon are extraordinarily important to him and when he isn’t tending to his duties as Johto league champion and Kanto Elite Four member, he travels with his Pokemon to ensure that the wild Pokemon in his countries are kept safe, especially from the gangster organization Team Rocket, which has infiltrated both his home country of Johto and the region he oversees, Kanto, numerous times. He’s quick to act when he sees Pokemon being treated unfairly - especially dragon types - and uses a ‘no second chances’ methodology in his battle tactics to save the day. He displays this when he discovers Gyarados and Magikarp in the Lake of Rage have been treated unfairly and unjustly, being forced into evolution by means of science experiments. Lance, instead of challenging a Team Rocket grunt to a proper battle, simply Hyper Beams the man out of the way so he and Gold can get to the secret base below the shop. If Pokemon are being injured, you don’t want Lance to find out. His retribution is swift and harsh.

He’s very passionate about Pokemon and his love for battling them is second-to-none. He takes his profession very seriously, being the Champion of the Johto League and the final member of the Kanto Elite Four. Defeating Lance takes an extraordinarily amount of skill, power, and love for your Pokemon…because he’s definitely not going to roll over and let you win. However, just because Lance is an excellent trainer doesn’t mean he’s cocky - when defeated, he is humble, and even excited, because he’s witnessing the rise of a new Pokemon master. Nothing excites him more than witnessing a trainer’s love for their Pokemon and a new challenge. He’ll never back down from one and relishes the rush that a challenge brings.

Background: Lance is one of the most famous Pokemon trainers in Pokemon history. Known as ‘The Dragon Master’, he raises dragon-type Pokemon exclusively and he’s known throughout the land as a heroic trainer who fights for Pokemon rights. He raises dragon-type Pokemon because he believes them to be virtually indestructible, the strongest of all of the Pokemon types. He is one of the few strict dragon trainers in the Kanto and Johto region, where he chooses to train and battle.

Not very much is known about Lance’s childhood. It’s known that he was born in Johto, in Blackthorn City, which is a relatively isolated mountain community dedicated to raising dragon-type Pokemon. It’s assumed that this is where Lance first encountered his first dragon-type Pokemon and this is why he has such an affinity towards the type. It’s also known that someone in the clan received the Elder Dragon Master’s (who is Lance’s grandfather) blessing as having the traits for a true Pokemon master. It is insinuated that this person is Lance, who left Blackthorn City to travel soon after receiving his grandfather’s blessing, to become one of the best trainers in the world. (Today, Blackthorn City’s gym leader is Lance’s cousin, Clair, who also raises dragon-type Pokemon exclusively, but none of her dragonair have evolved into a dragonite yet, further bolstering the idea that the individual who received the Master’s blessing was, in fact, Lance.)

What occurs between Lance’s beginning of his journey and his early adulthood is relatively unknown, but it is known that Lance is the current Johto Pokemon League Champion, which means he successfully defeated the formidable Johto League and sits (undefeated) awaiting for a worthy challenger to try to oust him from his position. Sometime after his successful conquer of the Johto League, Lance moved to Kanto, to become the fourth and final member of the Kanto Elite Four. It’s here that he manages to elevated himself to the true title of ‘dragon master’, remaining the much feared final member of the Kanto league to this day… while still maintaining his Johto Championship title. He takes both positions very seriously and a Pokemon battle with him is extraordinarily difficult - he’s the best of the best.

Sometime after Lance became the Johto League Champion and the head of the Kanto Elite Four, Team Rocket infiltrated the Johto League, attempting to take control of the nation through radio and propaganda. Lance, as the Champion of the Johto League and general protector of Pokemon, chose to infiltrate Team Rocket and spy on what they were doing, particularly on events at the Lake of Rage by Mahogany Town. Lance discovers, with the help of the Gold/Silver protagonist, that Team Rocket has been running genetic experiments on the Pokemon in the Lake of Rage to force them to evolve. The main experiment victims seem to be Magikarp, being forced into evolving into Gyarados. Through a quick battle, Gold manages to defeat the red Gyarados and put it to rest, while Lance sets about exploring the rest of Mahogany Town to locate Team Rocket’s lair. He discovers it in a shop and quickly dispatches the two Team Rocket members with a Hyper Beam from his faithful Dragonite. Together, Gold and Lance successfully eradicate Team Rocket from the lair, managing to save the Pokemon that were being experimented on and running Team Rocket out of Mahogany Town for good. He bids Gold goodbye, claiming that he will see the player again, and to continue serving Pokemon in such a loyal manner.

Lance reappears again at the end of HeartGold/SoulSilver, revealing himself to (still) be the Johto League Champion, challenging the player to a battle after Gold defeats Karen for the Johto League Championship. Certain events also cause him to turn up with Clair in the Dragon’s Caves in Blackthorn City, but I don’t consider these part of the timeline of the story. If anything, it shows that Clair and Lance are on relatively good terms and Lance still visits his family from time to time to train his Pokemon and become even stronger.

Abilities/Additional Notes: Lance is an extraordinarily talented Pokemon trainer. His ability to master the dragon type speaks to his determination and his talent with the creatures. He gets along extraordinarily well with all types of Pokemon, but he has a large soft spot in his heart for dragon types.

He is also a natural born leader and isn’t afraid to take charge when needed.

Upon entering Adstringendum, he has one male dragonite with him.
