Dear Democratic Party,
First of all, congratulations on your unexpected victory in November. Now, as long as that man's brain doesn't explode, you will manage to maintain an incredible tenuous hold on this nation's legislature, and all you have to do to pull it off is keep that whiny fuckface Joe Liberman happy. I'm sure this will create a sea change make things better keep things from getting too much worse here.
But now, to the meat of the issue: 2008. Lots of folks are saying you guys are pitting all your hopes on either Hillary Clinton or Barak Obama being the candidate that year. Hell, maybe you guys jack off at night imaginging them as (dare you dream it?!) running mates. That's very, very progressive of you, Democrats. Really.
So, please don't. Wake up and smell the burning crosses. Look, plenty of people say they're liberal and open-minded and what-have-you, but come Judgment Day '08 they're going to look at that lever next to Senator Obama's name, cringe, and then remember that they can lie their ass off about who they voted for. So they throw in with Jeb or whoever the fuck the Republicans are going to field that year. And that's the just people who would lie about voting for him. Think about all the people who would gladly and openly admit to not voting for a black man. Yeah, see, racism is still a fairly large issue in this country, whether Annie Proulx thinks so or not.
And Hillary. Hillary, Hillary, Hillary...you, uh...you guys have read the many, many articles written in national newspapers and magazines about how divisive a figure she is, right? You have heard how there are lots of people in your own party who admit they dislike her, often "without being sure why," right? Everyone was pissed that, when she was first lady, she wasn't content to merely sit there like a glaze-eyed Stepford wife, like Laura does. Let's face it, America is still as uncomfortable with powerful women as they are with a black man as President. Yes, there are good handful of powerful women in the world, now, but not in any fields that are as globally visible as the position of leader of the world's currently-most-powerful Empire.
Look, I adore that you're willing to be as progressive as you pretend to be, really I am. But, frankly, I'd really, really like a Democrat to take the office in '08. A lot. So, how's about we be realistic this time out. Maybe, maybe people would be willing to see Obama in a VP capacity, and any woman other than Hillary in such a role, but let's not overreach, eh? I'm not saying it's right, it's just the real world.
