He needed to put something with grip on the feet (like rubber) so they didn't slip so much.

I don't think they were slipping, I think the turning motion is just awkward and unoptimized. I don't think any of the legs actually shift their angle at all, they just move forwards or backwards.

it took me almost a half a day to watch that...but ZOMG it was worth it!!!!
