Mainly the people I am worried about offending are from one particular circle (uh, namely my in-laws). I don't want them to hate me or anything, but I don't feel like biting my tongue when someone makes a crack about how icky gays are or how Sarah Palin is totally awesome. I'm probably blowing things out of proportion, but yeah. The way things usually go at their house = not talking about politics or anything that might make someone upset. While I agree with wanting to keep conflict down to a minimum, it is VERY hard to bite my tongue when a trained educator says she thinks ID should be taught in school so that "they learn both sides of the issue."
Really, I love them and they are wonderful, but the way they see a lot of things, at least as far as I know, is counter to what I and most of the people I know think. It boggles my mind when wonderful, polite, caring people think gay marriage is not worthwhile.
I'm in agreement with your points. Except the marijuana one to some degree. I'm fine with it being a prescription drug, but I think the way that's been implemented is sometimes a rather cynical excuse for legalization. People on the internet who support it seem to present their argument as 'Dude you can get your weed card and then just smoke it whenever you want because you're like "anxious" (while making little quotes with their hands) and stuff'. Though since it's the internet, it could be me projecting that in some cases. I don't like tobacco and to me marijuana is another tobacco.
But everything else, come back to Bay Area, we're totally with you on that. :)
That is a good point. I agree with you on the excuse argument (oh man I need it for my "anxiety") because that's just someone being lazy and not admitting they just like it. It's like people who make frivolous lawsuits and stuff. If it were legalized, then you wouldn't need the stupid card and you wouldn't have to ruin the reps of everyone who actually needs it for a medical reason.
Or something. All I know is, I'm kinda sick of it being treated as this ooooo-scary thing when there are far, far worse things in this world. Like, Twinkies.
See, I originally posted in on FB, and then I thought, dang LJ has been kinda quiet except for the WoW groups, so I shall enliven it with my mild soapboxing.

On this side of the Caldecott, the offensive stance on any of these issues would be to disagree with what you've written.
I'm glad you aren't holding back with the people who would find any of that offensive. :)
