I got a review!

I received a major review, my first of any kind outside my beloved beta readers and critique partners, and it was a crappy one. I didn't have even the usual ream of five-star Amazon reviews from totally disinterested reviewers to buffer it. Unfortunately, I read it before my morning's writing session, and now Writer is hiding under her pile of ( Read more... )

We've already emailed so I won't go into all that again. But yeah--maybe you're tagged wrong. I think the "problem" with your story is it's not easily tagged. Is it fantasy? Romance? Steampunk? I think there are elements of all those, but nothing overpowering the others. Well, I'd say fantasy, but...

Yes, genre is something to think about more in depth. I have always intended the story as science fiction, but the story is told from the pov of a character who doesn't understand science. At a certain point, you have to remember Clarke's dictum--a sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. So if your characters are experiencing magic, and you remain true to their pov, the audience is experiencing magic. Ergo, fantasy.

But I'll let things sort out by themselves. I like world-building. I like science and engineering. I like romance. I like alien creatures with large eyes and sensitive souls. I may end up creating my own genre ;)

I would say steampunk fantasy. The romance is part of the story, rather than the story being part of the romance, if that makes sense?
I'll see if I can get my review up this weekend, maybe tomorrow.

Oh, and two word-substitutions in the last few chapters, after the magistrate-making. 'confidant' where it should be 'confident' and 'threw' where it should be 'through'. I don't know if you can fix the file without immense trouble, though.
